The Home Depot

Talent Acquisition Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

After working in the stores all throughout college, being able to go to THD's corporate headquarters and work on marketing strategies for them was an amazing experience. I loved getting to meet new people every single day, work on a meaningful project (posters I designed are now in stores nationwide!) and explore Atlanta with new friends.

Advice

Come in every single day ready to live The Home Depot's core values and to work hard. It's going to be an intense 12 weeks, but if you put in the work it will be an amazing experience!

Freight Associate

January - September 2019 • Hollywood, FL

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience of having to meet a wide variety of coworkers and customers. I learned how to properly build team cooperation in the freight department in order to get the job done fast and easy. An example of this can be seen when I take the initiative to assist the other freight associates who are having trouble move some heavy boxes or push a silver cart. Furthermore, I've learned to build patience in the work environment, since sometimes the job may overlap the given amount of time to complete. Outside of placing boxes from trucks onto silver carts for shelving, I managed to build my communication skills and allow customers to have a great experience in the store by directing them to their desired items and giving them recommendations on what is a good item to purchase based on my knowledge of the item.

What I wish was different

A detail within my time working as a freight associate at the Home Depot that I wish was different is if the assistant manager was more understanding towards occasions in which the unloading of the truck is behind schedule. Instead of accusing the freight associates for lacking proper skills to undergo the task, he or she should give more support and understand that not every day is the same routine. Problems can occur, such as low amount of associates or even truck issues. It should be the assistant manager's objective to learn to respectfully cope with those problems, and understand how to actively be supportive with the situations.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is that you should be mindful about giving it your all in this job. You must always come to work mentally and physically prepared. Additionally, drink plenty of water while in the job to keep yourself hydrated and sharp.

Flooring Associate

July 2019 • Daly City, CA

What I liked

I enjoy the setting when I get to work everyday. People are coming into the store that I work at to complete the projects they have in mind. They have problems and I am helping them figure out how to solve them. The managers are all welcoming and care about what’s going on in my daily life. Most of the employees enjoy their job just as much, so it makes work fun!

What I wish was different

I wouldn’t wish anything different from The Home Depot. One thing I do wish, is that customers would put items back from where they got it. When I have to return product because someone was too lazy to place it in it correct location, it takes time away from other customers.

Advice

This company is great at working around your schedule if you are working enough hours throughout the week. I started at 27.5 hours per week during the summer, but when school came around, they were able to reduce the amount I work to 20 hrs per week.

User Experience Designer Intern

May 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

It was and still is an amazing and valuable experience. The summer internship program at Home Depot was challenging yet fun at the same time. Lots of team building events, intern events, collaboration, and a big learning culture. The people you work with are very friendly and want to see you grow. You're placed in projects that actually matter to the company, it's not just busy work.

What I wish was different

If the onboarding process had been a bit more hands on it would have been much better.

Advice

Make connections. Build relationships. I can honestly say that's what got me the farthest. Meet up with random colleagues one on one and chat over coffee to get to know them. You never know, you could be needing their guidance in the future. Also, don't be afraid to take risks. You never fail, you just learn from your mistakes.

What I wish was different

Less repetition in day to day tasks. Organised plans and approaches to each day.

Advice

Be ready to work very early hours and work at a fast pace.

Finance Intern

May - August 2016 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Incredibly structured. THD has the internship experience down to a science. They place you under specific teams, with managers that already have projects ready for you to start on. Project-based work gives interns a chance to see what the real world is like, as well as provide a meaningful impact over the course of the summer. The internship program also provides opportunities to volunteer in the community, as well as opportunities to have fun with other interns in a more casual setting. The culture at THD is amazing, and you can tell that they really value their interns.

What I wish was different

The internship program is huge, so you don't really get too much say in where you end up. Even within the finance department, there are several different teams who work in completely different ways from one another. Your actual work will be somewhat up to luck, but that doesn't mean you can't pitch your strengths to your manager and see if he/she can create a project for you based on those. I think this is just something that comes with the territory of a large company, though. I can't really say a bad thing about THD. I truly enjoyed the people that I was around and the support I felt from the company.

Advice

Be proactive with your team AND with the other interns. The company and intern class is so large, that it's impossible to meet everyone. But I think interns should do their best to do so. Senior members of the firm are open to grab coffee or lunch if you ask, so don't be afraid to ask. Even if THD doesn't end up being the right fit for you, you'd be surprised at how many connections you could make that stem from THD. Senior members have done great things in their careers, and they know people . Your fellow interns will all go off to do amazing things as well, so get to know them and keep in contact! I think THD fosters connectedness and collaboration. So if you just like to put your head down and work solo, it may not be the best place for you.
