Lot Associate

June - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work outside with the nice weather. It was the first job I have had where I was able to work outside and enjoy the day while getting paid.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been scheduled for more hours. My scheduling manager was only allowed to hand out a certain amount of hours on a weekly basis, so it seemed as if the lot associates took the hour cut almost every week.

Advice

I would read the job description before you accept a job. I understand that it is hard to while you’re in the moment of signing the documents, but it is always important to read the description and find out what you are and aren’t responsible for while working.

Finance Intern

May - August 2016 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Incredibly structured. THD has the internship experience down to a science. They place you under specific teams, with managers that already have projects ready for you to start on. Project-based work gives interns a chance to see what the real world is like, as well as provide a meaningful impact over the course of the summer. The internship program also provides opportunities to volunteer in the community, as well as opportunities to have fun with other interns in a more casual setting. The culture at THD is amazing, and you can tell that they really value their interns.

What I wish was different

The internship program is huge, so you don't really get too much say in where you end up. Even within the finance department, there are several different teams who work in completely different ways from one another. Your actual work will be somewhat up to luck, but that doesn't mean you can't pitch your strengths to your manager and see if he/she can create a project for you based on those. I think this is just something that comes with the territory of a large company, though. I can't really say a bad thing about THD. I truly enjoyed the people that I was around and the support I felt from the company.

Advice

Be proactive with your team AND with the other interns. The company and intern class is so large, that it's impossible to meet everyone. But I think interns should do their best to do so. Senior members of the firm are open to grab coffee or lunch if you ask, so don't be afraid to ask. Even if THD doesn't end up being the right fit for you, you'd be surprised at how many connections you could make that stem from THD. Senior members have done great things in their careers, and they know people . Your fellow interns will all go off to do amazing things as well, so get to know them and keep in contact! I think THD fosters connectedness and collaboration. So if you just like to put your head down and work solo, it may not be the best place for you.

Customer Service Representative

May 2019 • Collierville, TN

What I liked

I love the work environment. My coworkers are terrific and always helpful. If I want extra hours, all I have to do is give them a call; then I'd be at work in the afternoon. Although the customers can be a bit much. So, I would not recommend this job if you do not have patience, tolerance, or are a minority. I've had customers call me derogatory terms for being gay and racist (all because the system wouldn't let me return their ten year old drill), and have seen my coworker called the n-word. I find it best to show them the door and say have a great day. It took me a month to get the hang of things, but I am somewhat of a slow, yet innovative learner.

What I wish was different

I wish Collierville people and Germantown people weren't so entitled. I have a customer who comes in and brags about his "84,000 square foot house" and his two precious $25,000 chandeliers while I process his return for 52 cents. He never bothers to remember me, so he has the same exact conversation with me every time. Other than entitled customers, everything else is perfect.

Advice

It really humbles you. I think every one should work three months in customer service and in the fast food industry so that there is more understanding. It is super rewarding when people let you help them. I've had multiple customers come in and at the end they gave me hugs.

Merchandise Intern

May - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed having the experience to expand my knowledge of business by working for a Fortune 500 company. I also enjoyed networking with top business professionals.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have spent less time worrying if I was going to receive an offer at the end of the summer and focus more on enjoying the experience.

Advice

I would advise future interns to work hard but also not stress over receiving an offer letter. At the end of the summer even if an offer is not given the experience alone will still be beneficial to your future success.
