The Home Depot

Sales

April 2020 • Lake Orion, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed working with my coworkers, and having something to do during a pandemic. I also appreciated that the company did its job to keep all of its employees safe. My store has only had one case of COVID-19, and we don't think they contracted it at work.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more training in different departments, as sometimes I would be called to other areas of the store I wasn't as knowledgeable about.

Advice

Apply early! Hiring for my store stops in mid-April for the summer, so send applications during March and April.

What I liked

I enjoyed interacting with the type of people who shop at The Home Depot. All of these people are driven and motivated. People who undertake home improvement projects personally, I found, are genuinely good people.

What I wish was different

Sometimes there was a lot of manual labor.

Advice

Ever since I got my forklift certification, I've felt invincible.

What I wish was different

There is nothing much that should be changed besides the pay. Every associate that works at The Home Depot deserves slightly better pay for all of their hard work.

Advice

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The people over there are very friendly and helpful. We always have barbecue and parties. The customers are very friendly as well. Sometimes they even brought food and drink for me to eat and drink. I can learn a lot from talking to them.

What I wish was different

I hope we can experience more positions instead of sticking at one position. Sometimes when it is near closing, not many cashiers are needed. I think it would be better if we can go help out other departments.

Advice

Always watch out for yourself, and always ask questions if you have any.

Paint Associate

June 2020 • North Versailles Township, PA

What I liked

Many managers in the store had been with Home Depot for a longer period time and have worked their way up. It was cool to see that they promote within the company and invest in their customers. There was also always a lot to learn in Home Depot regarding the knowledge in your own department and different departments as well. This made the job feel less mundane.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the lack of structure within the store made it difficult to locate people in different departments and also made it difficult to know what you were expected to be doing.

Advice

I would encourage you to learn as much as you can about your department. There is always more to learn. In return, the increased knowledge helps the betterment and ease of helping customers with their projects.

Corporate Communication Intern

June - August 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I had the chance to meet with many senior leadership, collaborate with different departments, and get first hand experience in the corporate communication sector.

What I wish was different

This internship was originally intended to be in Atlanta GA, however we were able to still continue the program remotely due to COVID 19. I am glad to have taken part even virtually, though I would have loved more networking opportunities.

Cybersecurity Intern

May - July 2021 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I highly recommend doing an internship with The Home Depot. I had an amazing time working for the Third-Party Risk & Compliance Team as a Systems Engineer and the engagement was very high. Along with an intern partner, we met with our manager and mentor almost daily and they helped us learn the skills to succeed in the role. Alongside that, we had weekly mentor circles with 2 employees from other sides of the company to help us gain more professional development skills, had exposure to executive leadership in the company, and be a part of many activities to engage teamwork virtually.

What I wish was different

I never really had any issues, but mostly due to the fact I could count on my immediate leadership and partner for guidance and trust. I think what the overall internship program could have done is let interns meet each other prior, or have an intern partner they could be with so that they could keep in touch back and forth. The first day of the internship and it wouldn't have been as amazing without my intern partner going through it with me.

Advice

Take advantage and meet everyone...even if they are not a part of the intern program at the company! Everyone loves engaging with the interns, and this allowed us to build networks in different areas of the company. One specifically with a product manager for a whole different area, who gave me the most important piece of advice that would stick with me...and it is to speak up. No one can read your mind and no one knows unless you tell someone; whether it be looking for a promotion, speaking against something, or even your feelings towards something or someone.
