Analytics and Data Science Intern

May - August 2022 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

Trane was a great place to work. The opportunities I had were endless. The projects and work I was given were really fun and interesting. Everyone treated the interns with respect and listened to what we had to say. I think the greatest part about Trane was the company culture and their mission statement. Their mission statement being "Challenge What is Possible for a Sustainable Future." This statement pertaining to both our climate crisis and our society. Working for to help create solutions for the biggest issues in our world made the work a lot more purpose driven.

What I wish was different

I wish the job description would have been a little more clear. I came into the position have a very small clue what I would be doing. Also, I had to re-locate to a different state for the position even though Trane has locations in my home state. Logistically and financially, it would have been nice not to move. However, I would note that Trane provided a moving stipend, and the experience of living in a new state was definitely worth it.

Advice

Asking questions, being clueless, and feeling lost is okay. In fact, it is expected from your superiors. It's supposed to be a learning experience, so don't feel bad if you don't know what you're doing. I would also say try to keep a positive and growth mindset. The one thing I realized is I basically know nothing in the data science field, but if I keep a growth mindset as I progress in my career my opportunities are limitless.

Technical Sales Intern

May - August 2022 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I really enjoyed this experience. I met some wonderful people in my office and in the field. I gained an understanding of the HVAC industry over the course of the 12 week program and was given great opportunities to shadow different team members in the office. I was able to see what the day to day operations are and was given tasks that would benefit everyone in my office. Trane has proved everyday to be an amazing company to work for and I could not be more thankful for this experience.

What I wish was different

Advice

Ask lots of questions!! Everyone understands that you will not know everything and they are very willing to help teach you. Take advantage of every opportunity you get to shadow someone!

Technical Sales Intern

May 2022 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Great hands on experience with a dynamic office. Flexible work schedule, work from home options. Competitive pay, 40 hour work weeks. Relocation stipend.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to have more opportunities with the staff I worked with. Unfortunately, they are only in the office roughly 1-3 days a week. Depending on the week it can feel pretty stagnant, just try to stay as involved as you can.

Advice

This internship is what you make it. Be outgoing, ask to go on visits, be as engaged as possible. Your coworkers are willing to help and enjoy teaching you new skills, just make sure you show them that you are there to learn and they will be more than happy to help.

product engineering co-op

June 2021 - July 2022 • Clarksville, TN

What I liked

I liked how I was able to have a variety of projects in different topics within the team I was on. I was able to work with people all over the company and people outside of engineering to finish the projects. I also enjoyed the company culture. Everyone was welcoming and I will miss my team members!

What I wish was different

I wish that people would have been in office more than they were. After COVID, our group switched to a hybrid schedule. For people who had worked here for a long time, this was helpful and convenient, but for someone who is new and trying to learn about the product and processes involved, it is much better to talk to someone in person.

Advice

I would recommend to come in with an open mind and be willing to do stuff you might not feel completely comfortable with at first. They are all learning opportunities and you want to get outside of your comfort zone to really be able to grow.

2022 Engineering Intern (EPIC)

May - August 2022 • Bloomington, MN

What I liked

I had a very enjoyable internship during which I learned a lot about the industry and met a lot of friendly, helpful coworkers. Everyone was willing to help me learn, and my teammates made an effort to incorporate me into as many different opportunities as possible.

What I wish was different

The start date was quite early compared with other opportunities (mid-May), but they were very flexible with moving it back for school or other reasons.

Advice

I learned that it's important to reach out to as many different people as possible and create connections with them so that they can be a resource down the line.

Technical Sales Intern

May - August 2022 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I loved the company culture and sustainability efforts and commitments.

What I wish was different

The organization did a good job talking about company policies and culture, the company structure could have been outlined better. My position was remote, so it was just difficult to learn the structure that way.

Advice

Ask questions and be ready to learn.

2022 EPIC Engineering Intern

June 2021 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

Primarily, the other employees. Everyone was very friendly and encouraging, especially as an intern. They would always go out of their way to help explain things that I didn't know, tried to diversify my internship experience, and gave me recommendations for things to do in the area since I was out of state. I liked knowing that the work that I was doing was going to be implemented in the future and contributed towards a more sustainable society.

What I wish was different

A more timely reveal of what projects I would be working on during the internship

Advice

Utilize the other interns and other employees to see what work they're doing and try to find side-projects that appeal to you, especially if the work that you are primarily assigned to isn't something you're interested in. Make connections with the people around you, as it makes the experience more engaging and fulfilling.

Digital Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

Everyone I worked with was so welcoming and friendly. They went out of their way to make sure you were doing well, being taught what you needed to learn, and were given projects that interested you. Every time I expressed an interest, I was allowed to explore that interest with meetings set up for me to talk to people who were specialists in that field. I was allowed to shadow people, ask them a million questions, and take on work to get hands-on experience. My time was always respected. Before given work, I was almost always asked if I would have enough time for it, and reassured that I could take my time or ask for help if needed. Work hours are respected and people genuinely showed an interest and care for one another outside of work, remembering those small personal details like your birthday or asking how an event went. The internship program itself makes it clear how much potential they see in you. Trane Technologies dedicates a lot of resources to help interns clean up their resume, practice elevator pitches, etc. I loved the professional growth element of the internship as it really showed respect for those who may not come back to work full-time. But, it makes you respect the company so much that you want to come back even more.

What I wish was different

Honestly, I wish I could have stayed here longer. The 12 weeks flew by and while I learned a lot, I know that I have so much more to still learn.

Advice

Network!!! Everyone here is so nice and welcoming. It took me a while before I was comfortable asking to set up a meeting with someone just to hear what they did in their job, but everyone is happy to talk about their work and offer professional advice. I felt like everyone here genuinely wants the best for eachother.

Technical Sales Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Broadview Heights, OH

What I liked

The best part of the experience was the people that I worked with. I really felt comfortable in the office and made friends with my co-workers very quickly. They were also very willing to take me to job visits and do on site learning. I also enjoyed the level of training that they Trane did about professional development as well as fundamentals of HVAC. Coming from a Civil background, I did not know anything about HVAC, but corporate as well as the local offices did a fantastic job at teaching me.

What I wish was different

Towards the end of my term I was moved to a resource coordination role because of a gap in employment. This role helped me learn how to take service calls and talk to customers, but was not what I signed up to do. I had no problem with the role and think it will be beneficial to me in the future, it was just an unexpected switch.

Advice

I think the most important thing to do during not only this experience, but any job is to take initiative. You can be as busy or as board as you want during your internship, show you want to be there and are willing to learn and help out even if something is not asked of you.

Lab Engineering Co-op

January - May 2022 • Tyler, TX

What I liked

The company environment is great for a young engineer. Everyone I talked to was happy to share their knowledge and answer any questions I had. The projects I worked on for the lab were valuable and will still be in use after I leave. My manager did a great job giving me more responsibility as he felt I could handle it. As co-ops we spent a lot of time with the new full time engineers and were encouraged to join extra-curriculars outside of work, which made for a really enjoyable workplace.

What I wish was different

The other residential co-ops and I had a meeting with our residential engineering VP, Katie Davis, and it was a really good learning experience. I would have loved to have had more group meetings with other executives and directors to learn a bit more about their roles and experience.

Advice

It is important to go into your co-op or internship confident in yourself and your abilities. The more you can learn and figure out on your own, the more beneficial your time with your manager will be.
