Travelers

HRLDP Intern

June - August 2019 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

The people were great and I felt like the work I did was valued. Networking opportunities allowed me to better understand all four organizations (Claim, Business Insurance, Personal Insurance, and Bond). The HRLDP community is small and there are plenty of build-in events (lunches with senior leaders, HRLDP alumni, current participants, Travelers Tournament trip, paint night, minor league baseball game, etc.).

What I wish was different

More work in the beginning after onboarding and mandatory trainings.

Advice

I'd encourage an intern to try to understand all parts of the business and meet with people who work outside of HR. How does Travelers make money? How does the claim process work? At the very least, understand what your immediate clients (employees) do to be the best HR business partner.

Business Intelligence Risk Control Intern

June - August 2018 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

I loved the company culture; everyone brought themselves to work and I felt I could too! Networking with employees within the company was extremely beneficial and easy to coordinate. I was able to meet many professionals within the company with different backgrounds and exposures to lines of businesses outside of my own, Risk Control. I learned more about which positions within the company would tailor to my interests and skillset through networking. The interns from the Business Intelligence and Geospatial Development Program and all others programs were from all over the country, extremely intelligent, and overall wonderful people to befriend and work with. I loved my experience!

What I wish was different

Hartford, CT was not the most exciting city to live in. Although, I had wonderful roommates from my program at Travelers, and other interns that became great friends of mine lived in the same townhouse community. Living in the same vicinity meant that I always had someone to hang out with after work, or explore the city/state with!

Advice

I would advise anyone working for Travelers and living in Hartford, CT in the Temple Street Apartments to branch out and meet participants from other programs early on in your time there. Every person I met inside and outside of my program turned out to be great friends of mine. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there!

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2019 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

They gave me a valuable project that would actually be beneficial to the company moving forward. My business acumen greatly improved throughout the summer, and I honed my technical, communication, and public speaking skills. They also had plenty of fun/social activities planned for us, not to mention free intern housing. Additionally, they had a mentorship program within their leadership development program.

What I wish was different

I would've liked to have been in a different location, but their only location options for actuarial interns are in St. Paul and Hartford.

Advice

This goes for any internship, but I would recommend asking tons of questions and building your network as much as you can. Travelers provided plenty of networking opportunities (including with senior leaders), and interns should definitely take advantage of them.

IT Intern

June - August 2018 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

It was interesting learning about corporate culture, and I enjoyed networking with people that worked in different parts of the company. It was a good way to learn about other career opportunities that exist.

What I wish was different

My work was very poorly defined, and my manager was usually not available to help clarify things, so a lot of my time was spent working on things that I later found out would not be used.

Advice

Strategic Planning Intern

June - August 2018 • Hartford, CT

What I liked

The culture was amazing. All of the people at Traveler's insurance are so open and willing to help. They also take an interest in your personal well being. They give interns tons of work, so we are getting legitimate real life experience. In addition, you receive most of the benefits of a full-time employee as an intern!

What I wish was different

Because the insurance industry isn't the most appealing, everyone has very little faith that they can recruit talent/ that they are good enough for young people.

Advice

Working at a big company is hard, but they have tons of resources. Take advantage of those resources and take the training courses they offer and utilize the opportunity to build your network.
