The Bridge Autism Clinic

Behavior Therapist

May - August 2024 • Saint Paul, MN

What I liked

I loved everything about this internship experience. I was able to learn so much about the field and grow as a therapist. The work environment is one of the best I have worked in and is fun and supportive. One thing to highlight is the amount of support you receive. There are a variety of challenges that come with being a behavior therapist, but other therapists are there to provide feedback and help in any way.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish would be different is my schedule so I could keep working here!

Advice

One piece of advice I have if you are interested in working here is to be patient and ask questions! It can be overwhelming at first with all of the information you learn in the first few weeks. Being patient with yourself as you learn and not being afraid to ask questions are crucial to success. Another piece of advice is to accept criticism and feedback well. There is a lot of support throughout and other behavior therapists will give you advice.

What I liked

I loved many things about my experience at the clinic, but here are a few highlights - having a hands-on experience with kids - trained by peers - community and group activities with other interns - access to communicate and network with people in aspiring roles - encouraged curiosity - always open to suggestions and very flexible with schedules

Advice

This experience is great and not many places are willing to invest as much time and energy into training students to encourage curiosity. I would say that if it ever feels like too much, please feel free to talk to others and take time to yourself.

What I liked

I loved being able to work hands-on with the clients and learn from people who have been in the field for a while. I always was able to get help when I asked for it, but they also let me be independent in areas where I was thriving. I also enjoyed seeing the difference I was making in the clients' lives and seeing them grow over the summer was really fulfilling. Additionally, the clinic is open on weekdays, so I always had weekends free during the summer.

What I wish was different

I have few, if any criticisms. I have been satisfied working here and have stayed on as a part-time employee after completing my internship.

Advice

Be open to learning. Somedays working here can be emotionally challenging, but there are always people around to help you if you need a break and they can often teach you new ways to handle tough situations in the future.

Advice
