Advice

Working at Dahlgren is wonderful. I received full benefits even as an intern, I am already paying into my retirement (and the government matches up to 8%!), and my summers there already count towards my time done for a pension. Not to mention, the work was fun and fulfilling - I saw firsthand how my work helps the Navy as a whole.

Software Development Intern

What I liked

Great people to work with! Was actually given real tasks to accomplish - you will be doing a lot of coding right off the bat. Flexible hours and great benefits!

What I wish was different

Honestly, the only unenjoyable part was getting started. Being a part of the government means there is a lengthy boarding process of getting a security clearance and making it through all the training. Once that's done though, the work is incredible!

Advice

Brush up on Java if you do anything software related, you'll be doing a lot of that there. Also, communication is key! Be sure to have a consistent line of communication between your supervisor, tech lead, and secretary and your life will be much easier!

Student Trainee

What I liked

I worked as the assistant to a quantum physicist, and much of the summer was spent researching, so I learned a lot of cool things! But even cooler was the lab where I got to apply my research. I also had a lot of flexibility with how I spent my time, and how I chose to arrange my work schedule.

What I wish was different

Not much, it has been a great experience.

Advice

Ask questions. If you are not sure how to do something, ask around. There are so many people around you that may have run into similar issues, and collaborating can save a lot of time and effort.

Wish I had a more physics-focused tasking.

Don't be afraid to apply to jobs or internships! Get your resume out there.

Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program

June - August 2017 • Dahlgren, VA

What I liked

I got to meet a lot of cool people and see how stuff I'm learning about is applicable to what the Department of Defense does. I also had a great mentor. He is probably one of the smartest people I have ever met, and having that network connection is definitely a plus.

What I wish was different

I didn't have much in terms of tasking. A lot of what I did was just "learning about the software" or kind of just messing around with it. There was also a lot of b

Advice

Advocate for yourself, and ask for more work if you want to do more.
