Bakery Clerk

June 2020 • Council Bluffs, IA

What I liked

I love everything about it. I get along with almost all of the people I work with and even consider some of us friends. I got to do some hands on stuff with packaging baked goods, icing donuts, cookies, and cakes, labeling and putting out product, as well as putting together orders for other stores. I also got to help customers at the donut and bread cases, and my manager was super flexible!

What I wish was different

It would be nice to have a full-time dish washer because doing the dishes isn't the most fun part of the job. Some of us forget to keep the dishwasher going, too, so having someone back there for their whole shift would be helpful. Also, one of our donut fryers wasn't very nice and didn't really listen to our manager, so I think firing him sooner would have been a good idea.

Advice

Just go in and spark up a conversation with someone (or everyone). We all are going to be working together, and it's a lot more fun when you're talking and connecting. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't know how to do something; I ask a million questions every shift!

Human Resources Intern

May - August 2020 • West Des Moines, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed gaining real hands-on human resource experience in a professional business setting in the corporate office. I enjoyed having my own cubicle, having responsibilities, and the general workday schedule of 8am-4pm.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to contribute to more meaningful projects in the office. I oftentimes was just sitting and staring at a double monitor all day doing tedious tasks, such as scanning, processing terminations and data entry. It would have been nice to meet other interns in the office too.

Advice

My piece of advice would be to always have a willing and helpful attitude no matter what taks you're given. Sometimes you have to do tasks that aren't your first choice, but work hard and you will grow in leadership and skills.

Customer Service Correspondence Clerk

May - August 2019 • Kearney, NE

What I liked

I liked how it was very easy and did not require a lot of beforehand knowledge to do the job effectively. Most customers were good and my co-workers were fun to interact with. Also, there were a lot of things I was required to do so the shifts went relatively fast.

What I wish was different

Overall, customer service wasn't too bad but I also worked at self-checkout so I wish I would've gotten more sifts at customer service.

Advice

Make sure you learn to be patient because there will be some customers who will be frustrated and just not in a mood to deal with someone. While most customers were very kind and understanding some will not be.

What I wish was different
