Ambassador of Fun; Confectionery Attendant

May - August 2018 • Scotrun, PA

What I liked

There are two titles in this description because I worked two different jobs at the same location. Ambassador of Fun was an incredibly fun job to have over the summer. We held a new activity for the kids visiting the Lodge every hour, which changed up what you were doing. You also had a small break between each activity to rest and regroup. We also had a Zumba-like dance party to finish the night out which added some good exercise into my routine. Confectionary Attendant was the job that paid more.

What I wish was different

I wish that the Ambassador of Fun position would have paid more so that I would not have had to work both positions. This is because the Confectionary Attendant position made me absolutely miserable and I had an overall horrid time working there. But because I needed the money, I gritted my teeth and got through the summer. The Ambassador of Fun position was essentially my paid outlet from the other job.

Advice

Sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do. Money is required in this world to make a lot of dreams work, so sometimes you'll have to work jobs you hate just to get by. But it's worth it in the end when you're able to reach your goals.

Advice

It was difficult but it was worth it. Some interpersonal reactions were good and it also taught me confidence and gave me a bit more of a backbone. Enjoy it while you can and don’t work too many hours or you may burn out.

Confectionary Attendant

June 2019 • Kansas City, KS

What I liked

I enjoyed the interactions with customers. Most customers at Great Wolf Lodge are there on vacation and thus are usually in a good mood. It's entertaining to people watch and see what kinds of people come to stay. It was also nice to be able to get free coffee to help me through the longer days.

What I wish was different

I wasn't too crazy about the hours. I did have open availability, but I was scheduled from 4:00pm to 12:00am 5-6 nights a week. I rarely was given more than one day off in a row and it was hard to have any sort of a social life always working.

Advice

My advice is to push yourself through it. Like most entry-level jobs, it consisted of tedious work for many hours on end for not that good of pay. However, by continuing to work 40+ hours a week for an entire summer, I was able to earn a good amount of money to start saving up on.

retail

July 2019 • Grapevine, TX

What I liked

i like the different experience of working with a different demographic than what I was typically used to. kids and parents expect different things as compared to shoppers from different stores and its fun being in a more lax and kid friendly environment.

What I wish was different

it is overwhelming at times with the demand. it gets very busy. scheduling also tends to give a little more than what you're prepared for with the heavy turn over.

Advice

give yourself the time you need to relax when balancing school life and work. i am not in a position where it is necessary to dedicate so much time and energy to work when i have other more important priorities. i am just simply speaking more generally about work though. more specifically i guess i would suggest to have a lot of patience with kids

Aquatics Supervisor

May 2017 • Wisconsin Dells, WI

What I liked

I worked with a really fun staff that had each other's backs and added so much humor to the job. There was always room for improvement and we were constantly receiving feedback/constructive criticism to help us be better employees. There were a lot of opportunities to be better leaders while also improving our communication skills with employees, management, and guests at the lodge. Great opportunity to home in on your fundamental leadership and managerial skills like public speaking, customer service, giving constructive criticism, organization, and time management in the supervisor role.

What I wish was different

It is extremely labor-intensive and physicall exhausting. I lost 30 lbs in 3 months (which is great for me but that is a lot of weight to lose so quickly). During a double shift (12 hours) you can expect to walk about 33,000-43,000 steps, non-stop. You are also doing this physically intensive job in an extremely hot and humid environment with lots of tripping/slipping hazards, a massive amount of chlorine ingestion, and guests that love to run right into you while you're doing your job. It can also become very tedious and frustrating sometimes, as your day-to-day activities are consistently the same and you rarely get to participate in different projects or tasks besides guarding (as a lifeguard) or your specific job requirements laid out to you as a supervisor.

Advice

Try to make the most out of this job, it can be tedious and exhausting but it does teach you some great skills that you can take to your future career.
