City National Bank

project coordinator intern

June - August 2023 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I liked the hybrid work environment, and what I was able to learn.

What I wish was different

I wish we would have had more in-person events for work to be able to mingle with fellow coworkers more. Additionally it felt that my projects were tacked onto me last minute rather than being a little more thought out.

Advice

Learn everything you can from everyone. City National Bank has an inclusive environment so many people you will speak to, and interact with are more than happy to teach you about their jobs.

Relationship Banker

January 2018 • Woodland Hills, CA

What I liked

I am emplyee of the bank and I did the project based internship. I liked the challenge of proposing a way to do things better operationaly.

What I wish was different

I wish I had started working on the deliverables earlier than I did. I feel like I spent too much time gathering data and samples.

Advice

Student: Look for a chance, challege, and way to do things better at your current workplace. Start the project early in the semester, do not procrastinate. Internship office: please lower the numer of hours required to fulfil down to 80. For a full time emplyee, it takes months to fulfill 135 hours of unpaid work.

Credit Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

Everyone on my team was eager to help me out; with every report I would submit, the analysts would sit down with me and walk me through anything they would have done differently or any mistakes I may have made.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more social events for interns.

Advice

Credit analysis is a great way to build your finance skills; I would definitely suggest having some basic understanding of income statements and balance sheets. Investopedia is your best friend!

Credit Analyst Intern

May 2018 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I love the company culture. The program was structured to give exposure to many aspects of banking, and I learned so much valuable industry experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have known more about banking before applying so I could have picked a more specific group to intern with, but ultimately everything worked perfectly so no real regrets.

Advice

Ask questions and don’t be afraid to not know everything. We are students and are interning to gain knowledge. You hurt yourself and your employer by pretending to understand and not asking for help.
