PAR Fitness & Wellness Intern

The goal of the Fitness & Wellness Internship is to provide students the opportunity to gain hands on experience in developing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating fitness and wellness programming and services for the City of Virginia Beach, Parks & Recreation Department.  The position will be responsible for supporting the Fitness & Wellness Unit in the aim of developing a culture of wellness and in promoting healthy lifestyle choices for all.  Students will have the ability to work with various populations in a community health/recreational setting.

Required Education: Candidates pursuing a degree in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Health Education, Recreation Management, Therapeutic Recreation, or similar field of study.

Duties:

  • Assist with aspects of program/services delivery such as obtaining participants, reserving space, preparing materials/equipment, and coordination.
  • Facilitate/Implement ( Certified Personal Trainers) introductory personal training services (i.e. Fitness Consultations and Fitness Assessments.
  • Set-up and Organize Personal Training Folders.
  • Design exercise prescriptions for clients based on health profile and personal goals
  • Facilitate/Implement (Certified Personal Trainers) Personal Training Sessions
  • Implement a variety of coaching cues/techniques
  • Review personal training client folder and programs
  • Review personal training revenue process
  • Develop, organize, market, implement, and evaluate a specific fitness/wellness program for a recreation center/staff/community (to be determined)
  • Evaluate program, analyze outcomes, and report results.
  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation of program outcomes and results.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

Expected Schedule & Duration: Candidates will work 10-40 hours per week (dependent upon academic requirements). Selected candidates must attend all training sessions and scheduled meetings. Willingness to assist with programming/services at multiple  sites is required.
