Network Technician
Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a Network Technician. The Network Technician will maintain adequate day to day network operations to all staff, faculty and students at Southside Virginia Community College; to insure network integrity, reliability, and availability at all times; to minimize loss of network services to all end users and identify potential network problems; to work unsupervised and be the first line of contact for escalated problems; strive for enhanced and improved network operations; research and implement new technologies; and to project a courteous and professional attitude to all persons at all times. Works independently on multiple complex projects with only broad supervision by the Network Engineer. This position offers teleworking options but is not a fully remote role. The Home campus location of Keysville, VA, or Alberta, VA, will be based on the chosen candidate’s preference.
Core Responsibilities include:
- Assist Senior Network Engineer with maintenance, configuration, troubleshooting and upgrading all networking equipment including but not limited to: Firewalls, Routers, Switches, Wireless AP’s and Controllers, and Network Appliances and cabling to the end
- Maintain a close relationship with Tier I support and provide Tier I backup support when needed
- Provide Tier 2 support on all network related issues
- Maintain a close relationship with the Help Desk manager and Server Engineer to ensure appropriate forecasting of college needs
- Create and maintain all network documentation and change management for the network infrastructure. Re-evaluate and update on a regular basis
- Networked Security Cameras/NVR’s, Lighting Controls, Card Readers
- Submit Telco trouble tickets when requested
- Maintains and oversees the Zoom Phone system and internal phone directory Maintains and oversees the Zoom systems at each location
- Assist Help Desk staff when there are technical difficulties with the ZOOM system
- Coordinate with Center staff for ZOOM classroom assignments, maintain ZOOM Class spreadsheet and notify instructors with ZOOM classrooms to connect to each semester
- Consistently demonstrates courteous, helpful attitude to students, staff, supervisors of the Community College, and to the public at large. Encourages subordinate staff to act in a similar manner. Promptly responds to customer/co-worker needs and queries. Fosters a positive work environment for all employees and public by displaying teamwork and cooperation for supervisors, co-workers and students.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Requires ability to provide daily oversight of network operations and effectively and independently troubleshoot network failures
- Requires knowledge of switching and routing using console or SSH.
- Requires ability to troubleshoot software and hardware issues.
- Knowledge of controller-based wireless technology, preferably Aruba Networking systems.
- Knowledge of various NMS’s and firewall configuration, preferably PaloAlto.
- Knowledge of network cable installation and termination.
- Knowledge of Security Cameras/NVR’s, Lighting Controls, Card Readers
- Knowledge of ZOOM meetings and ZOOM Phones
- Knowledge of hardware replacement on the network, and ability to ascertain if malfunctions are warranty related.
- Requires ability to accurately document procedures and maintain operations logs
- Requires ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, confer with others, or conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support.
