Mayor Intern
The City of Fitchburg is thrilled to announce an internship position for the Mayor’s Office! This opportunity is for students seeking to gain direct experience in municipal government and policymaking, network and build relationships with city officials and community leaders, and develop skills in research, communication, and public engagement. This internship will be a meaningful opportunity to make a positive impact in the Fitchburg community.
This position will work directly with the Mayor and city staff in several key areas including research, communications, public administration, and constituent relations.
This is an unpaid internship position which does allow for college credit. This position will have varied hours (details below), 15-20 hours per week from May-August. There is opportunity for remote work as well based on workload.
Responsibilities:
Policy & Research Support
- Conduct research on policy issues affecting Fitchburg.
- Analyze data and prepare reports on community needs and city initiatives.
- Track legislation and local government policies that impact the city.
- Assist with drafting speeches, talking points, and presentations.
- Assist in the research and possible application process of grants for the City of Fitchburg.
Communications & Public Relations
- Assist in planning and execution of specialty listening sessions and Coffee with the Mayor events.
- Draft press releases and newsletters.
- Help maintain and update the Mayor’s website and social media pages.
- Take photos and write recaps of city events in which the mayor attends.
- Monitor media coverage related to the Mayor’s Office and city affairs.
Learning & Professional Development
- Participate in learning sessions with city leaders: You will meet with different department heads or city officials to learn about their roles and responsibilities.
- Conduct informational interviews with elected officials or city leaders: You will be introduced to a wide range of instrumental roles within the city government.
- Attend and take notes at City Council and a variety of committee & commission meetings: You have the opportunity to get involved in local governance and be exposed to real-time decision-making.
Administrative & Office Support
- Assist with scheduling and organizing meetings.
- Community Engagement & Outreach with Mayor.
- Research and draft responses to constituent concerns.
- Assist in planning and staffing public events, ribbon cuttings, and town halls.
- Engage with residents and community organizations on local issues.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Public Affairs, Public Policy, Public Affairs, Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, or related field.
Certifications:
Ability to meet the transportation requirements of the position, including but not limited to, the ability to be at City Hall for regular work hours, City Council meetings, and other locations around Fitchburg for public events.
Necessary Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Interest in local government, policy, and public service.
- A strong ability to follow directions and work independently.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and with deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse individuals and groups.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City elected and appointed officials, employees, and the public.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software.
- Knowledge in social media platforms.
