Individual Placement-Alaska- Trails Technician

Position Summary 

Join the Chugach National Forest recreation program. Duties include maintaining sustainable trails and public use cabins. Placements will support the Seward Ranger District's Public Use Cabins and Developed Recreation program while working along Forest Service staff in the Chugach National Forest. Placements will be based out of Moose Pass, AK.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Core program work will include trail and cabin maintenance on 250 miles of trails and 18 public use cabins on the Seward Ranger District. This placement will support the District's Public Use Cabin's program and Trails program while working along Forest Service staff. Work includes but is not limited to basic carpentry, sanding and staining, deep cleaning, chimney sweeping, replacing/ repairing broken items, stocking woodsheds, reporting site conditions. Hiking, biking, ATV'ing, boating and aviation may be required to reach cabin locations. Work will require overnight trips up to 10 nights duration at a time. Placements may also assist the trails program maintaining and constructing trails, maintaining backcountry campsites, logging out trees from established trails, and constructing bridges.

Marginal Duties 

Placements may also assist the trails and developed recreation programs maintaining and constructing trails, cleaning outhouses, posting signage, maintaining backcountry campsites along with other tasks associated with the district’s recreation programs

Required Qualifications 

Placements will need to bring a positive attitude, and willingness to work in inclement (wet) weather.

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience using hand tools.

Living Accommodations 

This position is based out of the Kenai Lake Work Center in Moose Pass, AK. Moose Pass is a friendly and picturesque little town with a year-round population of about 350. It is tucked away in the mountains along the shoreline of Upper Trail Lake at Mile 29 of the Seward Highway, a National Scenic Byway.

Housing in the form of a bunkhouse will be available. All rooms are double occupancy. While dormitories may be co-ed, we generally put same sex roommates together. Dorms include use of the kitchen, living room, bathroom and laundry facilities.

Compensation  

$450/week living allowance

$1300 one-time travel stipend

$300/month (for 4 months) housing stipend

Eligible for AmeriCorps Award of $1,956.35 (requires 450 hours)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
