
Family Services Supervisor (Shenandoah Valley)
This is an administrative position serving the localities of Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro. This position supervises a unit of professional staff that provide direct services and case management to children and families involved in the Foster Care, Adoption and Resource Home programs, as well as the clerical staff that support that unit. The position reports directly to the agency’s Assistant Director over service programs.
General requirements include: Supervise a unit of Family Service Specialists, Human Services Assistants and clerical employees, assigning and monitoring Foster Care Workers’, Adoption Workers’, and Resource Home Workers’ caseloads, ensuring that all casework is conducted in compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and procedures; monitoring and evaluating staff performance; resolving complex policy and customer service issues involving the provision of Foster Care, Adoption and Resource services; maintaining effective professional relationships with staff of partner organizations for the benefit of Foster Care, Adoption and Resource Home operations; implementing new policies and ensuring that staff are appropriately trained. Works closely with the agency’s CSA unit, Child Protective Services Unit, Prevention Services and the other Foster Care unit supervisor to ensure a seamless continuity of operations for children and families served by these units. Assists in providing emergency shelter as mandated and required.
Working Knowledge of: the laws, policies, procedures, and programs relevant to the provision of Foster Care, Adoption and Resource development in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the principles, practices and techniques of social work and casework; thorough knowledge of current social, economic, and health problems; thorough knowledge of child, adolescent, and adult behavior and the techniques and means of interviewing, counseling, and investigating problems; thorough knowledge of community resources for social services.
Demonstrated Ability to: plan, organize, assign, and supervise the work of Family Service Specialists and support positions, ability to evaluate the performance of employees; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, officials, associates, employees, community partners, and the public; ability to collect and analyze complex data, draw conclusions and prepare technical reports; the ability to plan and execute effective in-service training and employee development programs; use tact, diplomacy, and a customer service ethic; and the ability to identify and implement policies, practices, and procedures to maximize efficiency and cost savings in the provision of foster care, adoption and resource services.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification): Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or a related field, and extensive experience in social work.
Possession of all requirements for this position as specified by the Virginia Department of Social Services.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must pass the agency’s background checks.
Preferred Qualifications (Experience, Licensure, Certification): Experience in the provision of Foster Care services and completion of required training programs or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities preferred. Possession of a BSW or MSW degree are desirable.
