Human Resources Intern
The Human Resources Department is organized into the following areas: Employee Relations; Employee Development; Workforce Development; Payroll; Benefits; and Employment Services (Talent Acquisition & Selection, Retention, and Classification and Compensation). Together this team supports a workforce of approximately 1,700 employees in more than 200 classifications in various fields and industries, each requiring unique knowledge, skills and abilities.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Human Resources Intern, primarily supporting our Employment Services (Recruitment & Selection) section with administrative and HR-related tasks. To succeed in this role, you should have strong learning agility and critical thinking skills, allowing you to adapt quickly and navigate HR processes effectively. The ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data is essential, along with strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly and professionally. Proficiency in using technology to enhance efficiency and streamline HR processes is highly valued. Additionally, strong attention to detail and organizational skills are crucial for managing multiple tasks with accuracy. An exceptional HR Intern will be proactive, eager to learn, and capable of balancing administrative responsibilities with critical HR functions.
Under the direction of a Supervising HR Analyst, responsibilities in this role may include:
- Test development
- Proctoring examinations
- Classification studies/Job analysis
- Checking references for selected candidates
- Completing salary studies
- Participating in department staff meetings
- Conducting research as needed
- Assisting with new hire orientations
- Reviewing applications, scheduling written examinations and oral interviews, scoring examinations, and inputting data into the applicant tracking system (ATS)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Maintain student status through summer or fall enrollment at an accredited college or university in a program with an emphasis in Human Resources, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Public Administration, or other relevant field.
- Have a strong working knowledge of computers.
- Be available to work part-time for up to a year.
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Possess a valid California Class C driver license (or an equivalent driver's license issued by a state or territory within the United States).
Desirable Qualifications:
- Pursuing a master's degree in Human Resources or Industrial and Organizational Psychology
- Interest in public service career

- Proficiency in conducting research and prepare clear, concise reports and thorough analyses of data
- Basic knowledge of human resources functions including job analysis, test development, and human resources management concepts
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Selection Process

- The selection process will consist of an advisory essay and a virtual oral interview, which together will determine 100% of the final score.
- Candidates who receive a passing score will be placed on an eligibility list. Those on the list will be notified as new vacancies become available.
The selection process will start with a review of applications to determine whether applicants meet the minimum qualifications. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, will be invited to participate in an interview. This position is open until filled, with the first review of applications scheduled for April 3, 2025.
