
Parks and Recreation Lead Aide - Little Island Park/Sandbridge Beach
Your Role
Supervising part time staff and volunteers, Community Service Workers
Open and close facilities
Majority of the workday is in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions.
Documentation and record keeping
Report incidents/accident and discrepancies
Providing customer service and enforce rules and regulations.
Cleaning and maintaining all parts of three large public restrooms (custodial services) and changing rooms on a (daily basis)
Empty large trash cans on a (daily basis)
Removing (shoveling) and relocating built up sand on park grounds.
Adapt to a constantly changing set of priorities and environment.
Provide routing maintenance and construction of park areas, amenities, and equipment.
Travel and care for satellite park locations
Operate lawnmowers, weed-eaters, light automotive equipment, common gardening/hand tools, various motorized equipment, and edging/trimming equipment; apply safety precautions accordingly.
Individual will work in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions.
Assist with and/or manage special event participation.
Physical tasks will include:
Independently lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds or a regular basis
Performing tasks requiring standing for extended periods of time and to reach for items lower than, at, or above shoulder level.
Performing tasks requiring repetitive twisting of hands, legs, neck, and/or waist.
Performing tasks requiring balance, stooping, kneeling/squatting, and/or bending.
Working outdoors with exposure to inclement weather, extreme heat/cold/windy - conditions such as temperatures at or above 90 degrees
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, or must possess certification in a related field, or 3 months of related experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Require a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver’s license eligibility requirements.
Special Requirements
May require operation of a motor vehicle to carry out assigned duties.
Schedules may vary to include work early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Individual location assignments will be determined by current department needs.
The current reporting work site is 3820 Sandpiper Road, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23456.
The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules, hours and/or locations, may be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather. Maximum scheduled hours up to 27 hours per week.
Staff member will travel and care for multiple park sites. Drivers License required.
Custodial duties mandatory.
Some assignments may require overtime or split shifts to cover operational needs.
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.
This position will require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assignment.
As a condition of employment, all part-time employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided your training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.
