POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Responsible for the safety of patrons at City Parks and Recreation swimming pools.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*

Position Specific Summary

The Lifeguard position at the City of Tucson’s Parks and Recreation department keeps swimmers safe by watching the pool, preventing accidents and enforcing safety rules. They are trained to respond to emergencies, perform rescues, and provide first aid while maintaining a clean, hazard-free environment for enjoyable swimming.

 

This position reports to a Pools Supervisor. This position does not supervise.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitors patrons in the pool and surrounding areas to ensure safety.
  • Enforces facility rules, regulations, and policies to prevent accidents.
  • Performs rescues and administers first aid or CPR as required.
  • Inspects the pool, equipment, and safety supplies.
  • Reports any hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Provides customer service by assisting pool patrons with inquiries and provides guidance on swimming safety.
  • Participates in regular training sessions and emergency response drills.
  • Monitors water quality by checking pool chemicals such as chlorine and pH levels to ensure they meet safety standards.
  • Ensures the pool deck, restrooms, and other areas are clean and organized.
  • Opens and closes the pool each day according to scheduled hours.
  • Documents any incidents and/or injuries.

 

Working Conditions

May require long periods of standing or sitting in outdoor or indoor environments. Working shifts may include weekends, evenings, and holidays. Exposure to various weather conditions, pool chemicals, and occasional noise. Indoor and outdoor work with some exposure to physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Some high school
Work Experience: No experience

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 15 years of age at time of application. Must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for two minutes, and complete timed water rescue exercises. Must be able to successfully complete the Starguard Training, in-water skills test, and written examination on lifeguard skills and safety.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong verbal communication skills to interact with patrons and handle conflicts diplomatically. Ability to stay focused, remain alert, and quickly identify potential safety risks. 
Ability to assess emergency situations calmly and take appropriate action.

Full Hourly Range: $15.00 - 22.50 USD

Special Instructions:

This non-permanent position will work on an intermittent or seasonal basis. Individuals in this classification may not exceed 1,300 hours in 12 months.

Starguard Lifeguard Certification required within 30 days of employment 
CPR required within 30 days of employment 
First Aid required within 30 days of employment
