THE POSITION

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and routine electrical construction, maintenance, repair and testing work.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Ideal Candidate for this position will be a “team player” with good interpersonal, time management, and communication skills. The Candidate must be able to follow directions and display good judgment, as well as be organized, flexible, approachable, resourceful, and a positive team contribution on a consistent basis. The Candidate will be self-motivated and interested in advancing their training and certification in Wastewater treatment and Mechanical Technologist at the Water Pollution Control Facility. Looking for Candidates with experience working on pumps, motors, gearboxes and other related equipment to wastewater, water treatment or a related field. Experience working at a Tertiary Treatment Plant with UV disinfection highly desirable. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs a variety of preventative maintenance on equipment and facilities to include lubricating, cleaning, and painting.
  • Performs corrective maintenance on plant equipment and process systems such as parts replacement, equipment changes, and cleaning of tanks and basins.
  • Maintains equipment and structures on remote sites, including pumps, wet wells, and lift stations, which may require the use of self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Prepares specifications and procures parts and equipment.
  • Evaluates the cost effectiveness of repair versus replacement.
  • Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that employee must be present to work on facilities and equipment impacting the public’s health and safety.

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Follow all safety precautions and regulations. Work weekends and holidays assigned.  Assignments will require employees to be “On Call” as needed. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Education and Experience:

Treatment Plant Mechanic OIT (Operator in Training)

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

One (1) year experience in the maintenance of pumps, motors, piping and wastewater or water treatment plant operations, or other relevant work experience, such as equipment manufacturing or industrial maintenance work.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver's license.
  • A current OIT/Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators certificate, issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board,  must obtained OIT within three (3) months of hire.
  • Possession of Grade I CWEA Mechanical Technologist certificate and Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate, are required prior to permanent appointment.

Treatment Plant Mechanic  

Experience:

Two (2) years’ experience in the maintenance of pumps, motors, piping and wastewater or water treatment plant operations, or other relevant work experience, such as equipment manufacturing or industrial maintenance work.

Licenses and Certificates:

Required upon hire:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license; and
  • Possession of a current Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators certificate, issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board; and
  • Possession of Grade I CWEA Mechanical Technologist certificate

Current Salary: 

Treatment Plant Mechanic OIT:  $5,852.02 - $7,468.86/mo. ($2,700.93 - $3,447.17/biweekly) 

Treatment Plant Mechanic: $6,148.32 - $7,846.96/mo. ($2,387.68 - $3,621.67/biweekly)

Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (2 % @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members).  The City does not participate in social security.  

Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  The City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance Maximum Family Medical Allowance (2025): $2,463.99 per month

Dental/Vision: City paid Delta Dental and VSP Vision Benefits

LTD/STD: City paid wage protection for long/short-term disabilities

Life Insurance: City provides $50,000 life insurance policy

Supplemental Benefits: Voluntary Supplemental Life, Cancer, Accident Only, STD/LTD and Critical Illness insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts available

Vacation: 6.7 hours per month during first three years of service

Holidays: 12.5 paid holidays (including two floating holidays)

Sick Leave:  8 hours per month

Bilingual Pay: $200 per month upon certification

Prof. Growth Incentive: $625 per fiscal year for education or professional activities
