Seasonal Fisheries Sturgeon rearing facility

Duties: Assist with field and laboratory sampling and analysis for ongoing restoration of lake sturgeon in the Kalamazoo River. The successful candidate will be assisting Gun Lake Tribal crews with all duties related to the job including, the collection of eggs and larval lake sturgeon, day-to-day maintenance of the streamside lake sturgeon hatchery (located in Fennville, MI) and related gear. The candidate will learn field and laboratory skills related to fish collections, including the deployment of gill nets, egg mats, and drift nets as well as the repair of sampling nets. Hatchery duties will include feeding juvenile lake sturgeon, cleaning, and maintenance of rearing tanks while learning research and data collection techniques and data recording. Hatchery tours will also be a responsibility for this position.
 

Qualifications: Applicants should be self-starting, highly motivated, and interested in performing fisheries-related fieldwork that often involves strenuous physical labor. Candidate must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) and work outdoors in all types of weather. Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries field experience,
possession of, or if they are working toward a fisheries degree or degree in a related field. Candidate should have good interpersonal and communication skills and must be at least 18 years old to apply. Employment with the DNR is subject to Civil Service rules and regulations of the State of Michigan. A variety of positions are classified as State Worker 4 positions, but duties vary widely by position. Additional information regarding the State

Wage: This is a temporary, non-career, position. State worker hourly pay rates start at $15.00 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous DNR experience, $16.08 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in the previous year, and $17.15 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in each of the two previous years. 


Duration: Up to 1,040 hours. The starting date preferred April thru September, the actual starting, and end dates are flexible. Daily work hours include mostly day shifts, may include some weekends scheduled as needed, and some night shifts. Hours worked will be mostly 40 per week with limited overtime shifts as needed.
