Seasonal Fisheries Southern Lake Michigan Unit
Duties: The job duties include assisting technicians with lake and stream surveys (using a full array of sampling gear including electrofishing gear and survey nets), rearing walleye, and planting them in various lakes. The employee selected for this position will also help with fish ladder maintenance on the Grand and St. Joseph Rivers. Other duties will be
assigned as needed. This is an excellent chance to gain valuable experience in a wide variety of fisheries fieldwork.
Qualifications: Applicants should be self-starting, highly motivated, individuals interested in performing fisheries-related fieldwork that often involves strenuous physical labor in all types of weather. Candidates must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries field experience, college fisheries-related course work, general knowledge of fish identification, and experience with power tools and equipment. Must be 18 years old, possess a current Michigan driver’s license, and have an excellent driving record. Employment with the DNR is subject to civil service rules and regulations of the State of Michigan. Wage: This is a temporary, non-career, position. State worker hourly pay rates start at $15.00 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous DNR experience, $16.08 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in the previous year, and $17.15 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in each of the two previous years.
Duration: Up to 1,040 hours. The starting date preferred is April thru September, the actual starting and end dates are flexible. Daily work hours include mostly day shifts, may include some weekends scheduled as needed, and some night shifts. Hours worked will be mostly 40 per week with limited overtime shifts as needed.
