Forestry Steward Intern | Clark County

Position Location: This position will work out of the Clark County Forestry & Parks Department office in Neillsville, WI.
Employment Term: End of May through Labor Day.
Compensation: $16-$19 per hour commensurate with experience.
Work Schedule: 30-40 hours a week up to 600 hours per field season.
Position Description: Golden Sands RC&D is an equal opportunity employer seeking one highly motivated and proactive Limited Term Employee (LTE) for the Clark County Forestry Steward Intern position. This individual will work with the Clark County Forestry & Parks Department to collect survey data using multiple forestry practices. See below for more details.
Duties:
- Conduct plot measurements of tree saplings and seedlings by species and height class.
- Collect and analyze forest reconnaissance and inventory data including: forest cover type, tree species, tree diameters, tree heights, stand age, basal area, soil type, timber volumes, habitat type, site index, tree growing stock status, and deer browse damage.
- Enter collected data into a tablet according to program standard operating procedures.
- Perform data entry, quality assurance, and control according to agency standards.
- Plan plot visits and access points efficiently with maps and GIS.
- Work outside in a wide range of weather conditions and difficult terrain.
Required Skills:
- Able to identify seedling tree and plant species native to Wisconsin.
- Experience in forestry or natural resource management.
- Experience working independently.
- Experience working with tablets, Microsoft Programs (especially Excel), Windows programs, and Google platform.
- Ability to use and interpret maps and aerial photographs.
- Knowledge of forest management, silviculture, dendrology, and timber types common to Clark County is preferred.
- Knowledge of Kotar forest communities habitat typing procedures.
- Familiar and proficient with the following forestry tools: compass and pace, clinometer, increment borer, diameter tape and basal area prism.
- Experience in forestry or natural resource management.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- UTV/ATV Certification preferred.
- Chainsaw Certification preferred.
- Herbicide Applicators License preferred.
Education Requirement: Bachelor degree or in pursuant of a bachelor degree in natural resource management, forestry, or related natural resources field or equivalent work experience to substitute.
