Outdoor Rangers Camp Counselor

Do you want to collaborate with outdoor partner organizations like the National Parks Service, The Audubon Center, Missouri State Parks, US Army Corp of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service and more?
Join the South City YMCA for the summer and be an Outdoor Rangers Camp Counselor. Spend the summer working with children and outdoor partners to foster a love of nature and exploration. Spend the days walking in creeks, exploring caves, climbing trees, and playing outside with campers.
Ranger Job Requirements:
- Minimum of 40 hours per week (hours 8:30 am-5pm)
- Comfort working in the outdoors, in all summer weather conditions
- Ability to walk up to 5 miles a day on difficult terrain (gravel road, dirt paths, off trail, etc.), and lift up to 50 pounds regularly
- Dedicate one afternoon per week to aftercare
- Spend one overnight with campers during the last week of camp
- available during Y staff training (TBD)
- available for specific Rangers training (June 2-6)
- available for 5 weeks of camp (June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11, June 14-18)
- opportunity to work additional weeks of traditional summer camp if desired
Basic Job Responsibilities:
- Follow General direction and perform other duties as assigned by the Day Camp Director, Assistant Day Camp Director and/or designee
- Ensure the individual needs of the children are met with the program guidelines
- Utilize sound judgement and discretionary skills in accordance with the Gateway Region YMCA policies.
- Maintain positive relationships with many diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers and program site administration and demonstrate strong public relation skills.
- Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.
- Maintain an environment that ensures children’s safety and well-being.
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities.
- May serve as support staff based on needs of program participants, ensuring approved levels of support, assistance, and record keeping.
