Desktop Architect
The Department of Health Services (DHS) Division of Enterprise Services (DES), Bureau of Information Technology Services, (BITS) is recruiting to fill their Desktop Architect position.

Where we are located. This position offers the option to work remotely up to 4 days per week and is headquartered at 1 West Wilson Street in the heart of downtown Madison. This position is also part of an on-call rotation for support outside of standard business hours. Schedule above may vary based on training or operational need.
Position Summary
The DHS Desktop Architect is the key technical expert responsible for managing and enhancing the DHS desktop environment and requires a combination of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and customer service skills. As the Desktop Architect, you will develop high-level migration plans, address critical deficiencies, and oversee the selection and configuration of desktop hardware and software. This role involves planning, implementing, and resolving issues across various computer platforms and requires advanced skills in IT systems integration, project management, and strategic problem-solving. In addition, this position demands a high level of technical and leadership expertise, the ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical partners, the ability to view challenges from an enterprise perspective, and manage a diverse workload.
Salary Information
The starting salary is between $51.00 and $54.32 per hour (approximately between $106,000 and $112,900 per year), depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required.
Pay for current or former state employees will be set based on the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. This position is classified as an IS Technical Services Consultant/Administrator and is in pay schedule and range 07-32.
Job Details
All applicants who may be appointed to this position will be required to allow DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.
Employees must have access to secure high-speed internet for remote work option. Mileage reimbursement to the employee’s headquarter location is not provided. Remote work flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.
For positions that allow remote working flexibility, working outside of Wisconsin or in bordering cities will not be allowed except in extremely limited circumstances due to the need to report to an office location in Wisconsin on short notice.
DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.
Qualifications
Minimally qualified applicants will have all of the following:
- Experience creating and maintaining the architecture for desktop systems, including operating systems, applications, and hardware configurations.
- Experience implementing and maintaining security measures to protect desktop systems from vulnerabilities and threats.
- Experience providing support and troubleshooting for complex desktop issues and collaborating with other IT support teams.
- Experience integrating desktop systems with existing IT infrastructure and enterprise applications.
In addition, highly qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:
- Experience using Microsoft Windows Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to manage Windows PCs or servers.
- Experience testing and determining interoperability of software using application packaging principles.
- Experience using desktop management tools such as Ivanti Endpoint Manager.
