ORANGE COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENT
The Orange County Probation Department enjoys a collaborative and team- focused environment. It is comprised of 900+ employees and consists of three bureaus: Adult Operations, Juvenile Operations, and Administrative Services.  Each bureau is comprised of several divisions with broad responsibilities including, but not limited to supervising clients in the community and supporting their rehabilitation efforts; providing a safe environment for youthful offenders in custody; and providing administrative, strategic and fiscal support for all functions.
 
Additionally, the Probation Department assists the criminal and juvenile court system through investigations, probation reports and community supervision of approximately 10,000 adult and 800 juvenile clients on court-ordered probation or in diversion programs. The Probation Department also operates the Orange County Juvenile Hall, and two camps for youth. In addition, there are two Youth Reporting Centers serving North and Central Orange County.

ADULT FIELD SUPERIVISION
The Adult Field Supervision (AFS) Division of Orange County Probation is responsible for the active supervision of adult offenders that have been placed on formal probation supervision by the Court. AFS officers monitor offenders’ compliance with Court orders via office visits and unannounced home visits, provide referrals and resources to assist offenders with establishing a healthy productive lifestyle, and contact victims to ensure offender compliance with protective orders and restitution payments.
 
THE OPPORTUNITY/RESPONIBILITIES
Units within the AFS Division actively supervise between 300-400 offenders at any given time. Each offender is required to be seen face to face at least two times monthly to discuss progress, case dynamics, and ensure compliance with Court orders. In addition to this, officers are required to complete casework designed to strengthen any deficiencies that may be present for the offender.
 
Interns will be working directly under the supervision of probation officers.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
 
 

  • Composing warrant requests and progress reviews
  • Contacting probationers and collaboratives to obtain progress updates
  • Filing and organizing documents within an offender’s file
  • Requesting police reports
  • Composing casework narratives and summarizing circumstances of an offense
  • Composing and mailing victim letters
  • Auditing cases to ensure required documents have been obtained
  • Reviewing record checks and summarizing criminal histories
  • Observe and assist with office visits

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This recruitment is open to applicants who are currently enrolled in or have graduated within the last six (6) months from an accredited college or university undergraduate or master’s degree program with a focus in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or a similar field. Applicants must also successfully pass a  thorough background check, which is required for all applicants with the Orange County Probation Department.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Desire to learn more about the rehabilitation process and the importance of accountability paired with compassion
  • Basic computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Ability to effectively listen and communicate with potentially difficult people
  • Ability to summarize information in writing with proper grammar and punctuation
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding the identity and personal details of the supervised offenders 


TIME COMMITMENT
This is an in-person internship during which the intern must be able to commit a minimum of 15 hours per week. The internship may last for up to a year, depending upon the agreement between the County and the intern.
