Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

The Climate Change CVA (CCCVA) will actively engage the public through informational activities that highlight the effects of climate change and ways individuals can help mitigate these impacts. This role will leverage both event and recurring volunteers, providing them with hands-on experiences in the park to advocate for and participate in activities aimed at reducing climate change effects.

The CVA will also forge new partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and government agencies to enhance awareness and create opportunities for public engagement, particularly among underserved communities. Collaborating with NPS Interpretive, Resources, and Facilities divisions, the CVA will identify the park’s top volunteer needs and develop meaningful opportunities that appeal to volunteers while addressing those needs.

The CVA will work closely with NPS staff, partners, and existing volunteers to prioritize these opportunities, which may include beach cleanups, unit maintenance and beautification, educational programming, and other essential activities.

Site Description

WAPA is home to multiple and varied disconnected units throughout the island of Guam.  These units include beaches, mountains, and other mission related sites.  War in the Pacific's volunteer program includes event volunteers who participate in annual activities like the International Coastal Cleanup, National Public Lands Day, World Oceans Day, and the National Day of Service. Community and military groups frequently request to engage in volunteer projects at War in the Pacific NHP. The park collaborates with various federal and local government agencies and community stakeholders to promote environmental and preservation awareness throughout the year, focusing on reaching underserved communities affected by climate change. This year War in the Pacific NHP will include volunteer projects that are citizen scientist centric, such as eradicating invasive brown tree snakes to prepare a refuge for endangered birds on our park site. We will also be focusing on conducting ecosystem surveys to analyze the native animal and plant species that live in the park and what threats those species are currently facing.  Additionally, War in the Pacific NHP has a flexible volunteer program that allows individuals to contribute on their own schedule, alongside hosting monthly park maintenance and trial clearing events. These events aim to keep the park clean and educate participants about threats to our ocean and land ecosystems, as well as strategies for mitigating those threats.

Description of Duties:

Engage with the public to create awareness of climate change and how it effects the lives of our coastal community.

Create and coordinate events, programs, and exhibit style pop-ups (to include materials used) of environmental and anthropogenic threats to our unique island ecosystems.

Utilize volunteers in parks during annual and monthly clean up events to help beautify the park and use the events as an opportunity for engagement regarding climate change and the impacts on the environment.  i.e.:  sand sifting for microplastics and other small trash, removing invasive plant species, monitoring water quality and temperature, refuse, reuse, reduce and recycle, native tree planting, pack in pack out concepts.

Recruit reoccurring volunteers to assist with awareness programs.

Engage with and make connections with government, business and community organizations who are also involved with climate change awareness efforts and forge partnerships with them.

Identify and make contacts with underserved, climate change affected community groups to engage with on climate change programs.
