Firefighter Non-EMT and Firefighter EMT/Paramedic
The City of Mason City is taking applications for the Firefighter Non-EMT and Firefighter EMT/Paramedic civil service hiring list, which consists of a physical ability test and written exam. The candidate list created from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time Firefighter Non-EMT and Firefighter EMT/Paramedic positions within the Mason City Fire Department.
The Mason City Fire Department has served the citizens of Mason City since 1870. It is a career department with 47 Firefighters and operates with three battalions working 24 hour shifts. The department also provides ambulance services in north central Iowa and responds to over 6,000 calls a year.
Position Summary
Protect life and property by performing fire fighting, emergency medical care, technical rescue, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Maintain fire/EMS equipment, apparatus, and facilities.

Minimum Requirements:
- Graduation from high school or GED from an accredited institution of higher learning.
- No specific work experience or certification required. See special requirements below.
Special Requirements:
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must become a Certified EMT within 18 months and a Paramedic within three years of appointment to this position. Certification courses will be coordinated by the Mason City Fire Department.
- Valid Iowa Chauffeurs license within 30 days of hire.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years, must be able to read and write the English language.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements for the position and MFPRSI physical standards upon hire.
- The employee must maintain residence within 10 miles of the corporate limits of Mason City, Iowa, within six (6) months of date of employment.
The physical ability test and written exam will be conducted on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Candidates will receive additional details about the testing as the posting end date approaches and an application is received.
