Local Hire Hazard Mitigation Insurance Specialist

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has an immediate need to employ temporary local hires to assist with disaster response and recovery efforts in Melbourne and Tallahassee, Florida. Local hire employees are typically local residents who aid in the recovery of their community and help their fellow citizens in the recovery process. A local hire's term of employment is 120 days. Local Hire appointments may be extended, in 120-day increments, based on the needs of the disaster.

In this Local Hire (Hazard Mitigation Insurance Specialist) position, you will provide technical advice and information to staff concerning the process for flood insurance claims and the relationship of flood insurance with disaster assistance programs.

Typical assignments include:

  • Analyzing and interpreting non-federal flood and non-flood property insurance policies.
  • Responding to requests from staff assigned to the Disaster Recovery Centers, insurance agents, lenders, adjusters, and Federal, State and local government officials regarding flood insurance issues.
  • Researching complex insurance issues (e.g., basement coverage, 30-day waiting period, how to file ICC claims) and following up as required.
  • Distributing insurance information to disaster-affected communities (e.g., fliers, publications, videos, statistics, public service announcements, insurance availability).
  • Answering homeowners' questions concerning National Flood Insurance Program policy, rules and regulations.

  • You must be a U.S. citizen to be considered for this position.
  • You must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Selective service registration is required for males born after 12/31/59.

  • Minimum age of eighteen years of age is required.
     

Qualifications

To qualify for this Local Hire (Hazard Mitigation Insurance Specialist) position, you must possess experience:

  • Experience in flood, property, or casualty insurance sales; OR
  • Experience administering/servicing flood, property, or casualty insurance policies or programs; OR
  • Experience educating individuals in flood, property, or casualty insurance.
