Parking Enforcement Officer
A Parking Enforcement Officer is responsible for the enforcement of laws and ordinances pertaining to parking throughout the City. Work consists of routine patrol of an assigned district for the purpose of checking on parking meters in metered lots and on metered streets and other prohibited parking, plus court testimony relevant to same as required. Additionally, Parking Enforcement Officers will use a computer based parking enforcement system to review and validate parking violations through use of a computer and tablet. Assignments are received from, and work is performed under the general supervision of a superior officer. Although work is performed in accordance with established rules and procedures, a Parking Enforcement Officer is expected to exercise independent judgment and discretion in the performance of the tasks.
A Parking Enforcement Officer may be called upon to do any or all of the following (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform):
- Enforce the laws and ordinances of the City of Royal Oak pertaining to parking.
- Check automobile parking in metered and otherwise restricted areas; and write violation tickets for vehicles that are illegally parked.
- Testify in court regarding contested tickets.
- Report meters out of order.
- Watch for stolen cars and missing persons.
- Provide information and assistance to the general public.
- Perform related work as required or assigned.
A Parking Enforcement Officer, upon application, shall have the following training and experience:
- Graduation from a standard high school, plus experience in public contacts, ordinance enforcement AND court testimony.
- A valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's permit with a clean driving record.
