Youth Development Professional Internship
POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Youth Development Professional Internship/Work Study
DEPARTMENT: Programs
REPORTS TO: Club Director
HOURS: 10-15 hours a week Monday-Friday between 4:30-7:00
PAY: Semester Stipend or Work Study
OVERVIEW:
The Boys & Girls Club of Grand Rapids is an after school program serving youth ages 6-18. We are a low barrier program offering after school programing to members for only $5 a year. During program, members receive a snack, a hot dinner and opportunities to learn and grow within our program areas - Education, Sports & Fitness, Social Recreation, Art, and Social and Emotional Learning. Our goal is enable all young people to reach their full potential as responsible citizens through education, recreation, and positive community experiences.
OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES FOR THE STUDENT:
• Hands-On Experience: Work directly youth ages 6-18 in an after school setting. Practice rapport building, behavior management and mentorship skills
• Lesson Planning Skills: Contribute to the planning of engaging activities for youth within a specific program area.
• Professional Growth: Learn in a collaborative, team environment with mentorship and support from Youth Development Professional leadership.
• Networking: Build your professional network by engaging with youth development professionals and non-profit leaders.
KEY DUTIES:
• Create and facilitate a safe and positive environment by building rapport with members, and upholding the expectations of the club
• Support Youth Development Professional staff in key program areas including Education, Sports & Fitness, Social Recreation, Art, and Food Service
• Provide guidance to Club members and serve as a role model

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- A desire to work with youth and some experience having done so in the past
- Ability or willingness to learn how to develop, plan, and implement quality programs for youth
- Ability or willingness to learn how to organize and supervise members in a safe environment

Hand-eye coordination is necessary to perform certain duties. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to moderate in office setting to moderate and usually loud in recreation and play settings when children are present. All employees working directly with children at all Boys & Girls Club of Grand Rapids Youth Commonwealth locations may be required to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions.
