Director of Programs

DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
Qualifications: 1) Minimum of a bachelor's degree; 2) at least 2 years of experience working in a
program serving at-risk and/or low-income urban youth and adults; 3) at least two years experience
providing effective administrative leadership is desired
Responsible to the President/CEO
Function: Oversee and implement the planning, organizing and evaluation of all programs according to
program goals and outcome objectives.
Responsibilities—ALL YEAR:
1. Plan, organize, and implement programs in accordance with Tall Turf’s mission, vision, values,
strategic plan, and governing policies developing goals and outcomes for each.
2. Recruit an adequate number of qualified staff and volunteers to fill needed positions for both
summer and school year programs in accordance with personnel policies, goals and guidelines.
3. Supervise and provide administrative leadership for program staff.
4. Ensure that all programs comply with rules, standards and regulations of all public agencies as well
as Federal, State and Local laws.
5. Operate programs in a cost-efficient manner within approved budget parameters.
6. Develop and provide initial and on-going training, in-services, supervision and support for program
staff and volunteers to effectively perform their responsibilities in an exceptional manner.
7. Assist the President in obtaining and preparing and required information and reports for agencies
such as USDA, Grand Rapids Community foundation, as well as any present or potential funding
sources.
8. Assist the President and Board in seeking and soliciting donations of needed resources and funding
for all programs as needed.
9. Work in cooperation with agencies and churches that share and support Tall Turf's mission.
10. Meet with the President at least once a week. Provide the President with information, data and
progress reports at least once per month or more as needed or requested.
11. Seek opportunities to promote the mission and programs of Tall Turf whenever and wherever
possible.
12. Assist with creating and maintaining promotional materials including brochures, newsletters,
updating social media, etc.
13. Attend all Program Committee meetings, providing the committee members with needed
information and reports on programs.
14. Attend Board meetings as requested by the President or Board Chairperson.
15. Work with Office Administrator for camper recruitment: developing and distributing materials,
coordinating with churches, schools and social agencies, recording sign-ups and making camper
lists, sending out confirmation cards, communicating with out-of-town sources, and registering
campers.
16. Accept and perform any additional responsibilities assigned by the President.
I. Responsibilities-SCHOOL YEAR
1. Recruit and hire adequate number of Leaders In Training.
2. Provide needed and required training, supervision, and support for program staff and volunteers
3. Meet weekly with program staff.
4. Meet 2-3 times weekly with school year LITs and ensure adequate supervision
5. Plan and implement trainings and opportunities for LITs to develop leadership skills, college
preparation, and grow in their faith
6. Coordinate and oversee the planning of the Spring Break College Tour and/or Spring Break
service project.
7. Coordinate college and career visits for LITs.
8. Coordinate LIT internship opportunities and provide overall supervision.
9. Plan and coordinate weekly opportunities to engage elementary age campers through the LIT
program
II. Responsibilities-SUMMER SPECIFIC
1. Live at camp during the summer and providing overall program and staff leadership.
2. Be familiar with and adhere to all DHS Camp Licensing regulations, ACA Standards, Fire and Health
Procedures
3. Schedule and coordinate transportation for Youth Camp and monitor the safe passage of all campers
and staff
4. Plan and implement staff orientation along with the appropriate number of summer staff in-services
5. Handle all parent communication and concerns
6. Lead daily Leadership Team meetings
7. Supervise all Youth Camp staff and lead them in personal and spiritual development and
effectiveness as staff members
8. Maintain a filing system, preserving the history of the Youth Camp program and providing
information on all current camp policies
9. Coordinate evaluation of all Youth Camp Staff Members
Required Qualifications:
1. A commitment to and faith in Jesus Christ as Redeemer and Lord over all of life and active
involvement in the Body of Christ.
2. Ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences.
3. Understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and demonstrated cultural competency
4. Bachelor’s degree
5. Experience working with youth from diverse racial/ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
6. Experience supervising/mentoring/leading college and high school staff and volunteers
7. Knowledge of and experience with behavior management
8. Leadership and administrative experience
9. A minimum of two years of direct experience working with camping ministry
10. At least five years of experience in youth ministry or a youth serving organization
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree
2. Knowledge of camp licensing and/or accreditation
3. Past Tall Turf staff member, Leader In Training, or camper
4. GRIL (Grand Rapids Initiative for Leaders) Graduate
5. Experience working with youth and families
6. Participation in anti-racist training
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
8. Prior experience with developing and managing budgets
9. Demonstrated ability to effectively delegate responsibilities
10. Bi-lingual (English – Spanish) ability
11. Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certification
Additional Essential Functions:
1. Ability to communicate and train staff and campers/program participants in safety
regulations and emergency procedures.
2. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
related to the activity.
3. Ability to communicate and work with diverse groups of people and to provide necessary
instruction to campers/program participants and/or staff.
4. Ability to observe camper/program participant behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce
appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management
techniques.
5. Cognitive and communication abilities to plan, supervise, and/or conduct activities to
achieve camper/program participant development objectives.
6. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring rescuing a child.
7. Cognitive and communication abilities to supervise and lead staff.
8. Knowledge and ability to safely drive vans occupied with up to 12 passengers.
9. Ability to follow state health, fire, and licensing rules and regulations as well and
accreditation standards.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
