Public Policy Associate
Work with Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon as a QVS Fellow!
About the position:
EMO’s public witness and advocacy efforts support the marginalized, poor and voiceless. We are a consistent faith presence at the Oregon Legislature, and we also train and engage congregations and people of faith to participate in this important aspect of our ministry.
You will contribute to legislative efforts to address climate change and increase state and federal funding for services for those facing food insecurity, newly arrived refugees, immigrants and survivors of domestic violence. You will work as a member of EMO’s Public Policy advocacy team through legislative advocacy at the State Capitol. You will help create and support advocacy coalitions, prepare communications for partners and supporters, conduct outreach to members of the media, attend policy meetings, guide advocacy volunteers, research and analyze policy proposals, follow legislative deliberations of particular bills, present to groups interested in faith-based advocacy, plan advocacy events and schedule meetings between legislators and elected officials.
You will work with community members, providing pathways for the community to directly share community needs and aspirations with those in power. And you will work with people of faith and people of goodwill at Oregon congregations, interfaith partners and fellow advocacy organizations.
Required qualifications:
Proven work ethic, strong writing skills, attention to detail, ability to work well under deadlines, work in collaboration with others and juggle multiple tasks. Interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated initiative and the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced work environment.
Preferred qualifications:
We greatly value team members who can advocate from a perspective of lived experience as an immigrant, refugee and person of color.
Other preferences: Public-speaking skills and experience; experience serving on or building coalitions; experience recruiting or managing volunteers; experience speaking with the media; experience working with faith leaders; experience evaluating legislative proposals; knowledge of the legislative process; understanding of or experience working
with individuals living without a home, directly impacted by federal and state immigration policies or directly impacted by climate change.
About Quaker Voluntary Service:
Quaker Voluntary Service is an 11-month service program operating in Boston, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Portland, OR. During their service term, QVS Fellows receive many supports including:
