Glimpse of the Job:

The Texas A&M University Libraries are seeking a dedicated Curator of Maps (Assistant Librarian) to join their team! In this role, you will manage and expand our extensive collection of rare, unique, and historical maps, curate engaging exhibitions, and support academic research. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cartography or library science with experience in map conservation and digital archiving. We are looking for someone who is excited to work with our world class map collections and share that excitement with others. This role has incredible potential for growth and will allow the selected candidate to work independently within this area of expertise.

This position will report to the Assistant University Librarian for Special Collections. The Curator of Maps will be housed in the Cushing Memorial Library & Archives but will also be responsible for the management of the Map Room within the Evans Library.

Opportunities to Contribute:

-Manage and provide expertise for contemporary, rare, and historic maps and atlases, their production, cartographic methods, and digital collections
-Support academic programs by providing reference activities to meet the needs of students, faculty, and researchers
-Manage the acquisitions and donations for both special collections and circulating collection materials
-Develop and maintain relationships with current and future donors to augment and promote the map collections
-Participate in processing activities, including the arrangement and description of maps, the creation of archival finding aids, and assisting with cataloging and metadata
-Provide expertise to the Special Collections and Archives (SCA) Division and the Libraries
-Collaborate with other SCA Division curators and archivists to create maps specific digital collections to enhance engagement with maps and other related materials
-Participate in the development and implementation of SCA Division and Libraries’ programs and services to meet the needs of students, faculty, researchers, and other audiences
-Assist with exhibitions and tours while providing excellent customer service to patrons
-Attend events in order to promote the collections, publicly representing the Libraries and the collections in marketing endeavors by Texas A&M University 
-Perform specialized curatorial and/or archival work, such as acquisitions, reference, instruction, outreach (including exhibits), and donor relations
-Participate in professional organizations and scholarly activities to incorporate new ideas and technologies into library services and programs

Requirements

Qualifications:

Master's degree in library science or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

A well-qualified candidate will also possess: 

Three years post-graduate professional experience working in a university library, museum, or archives
Knowledge and/or experience relating to maps, collections management, or the map trade
Experience with digital tools or platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, Spotlight, StoryMaps, Mapbox)
Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment with shifting priorities
Reading knowledge of foreign language(s), especially Spanish
Working knowledge of Government maps
Experience with booksellers and vendors
Demonstrated project management skills
