Job Description
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Drinking Water and Environmental Health Division is filling an Environmental Engineer 9-P11 or Licensed 12 position. This position will collaborate with a team of experienced staff to oversee engineered wastewater system projects, alternative wastewater treatment system projects, and other wastewater system proposals prepared by a third-party engineer.

Examples of actual projects for these positions include:
Provide technical expertise to local health department and internal staff regarding site suitability, soil conditions, and onsite wastewater treatment system design evaluation, review, and approval.

  • Represent EGLE at meetings with local health departments, government officials, industry associations, and various organizations to discuss statewide standards and considerations for critical and complex onsite wastewater treatment projects.
  • Contribute to a team of professionals in charge of Michigan’s onsite wastewater treatment systems.

The work location of this position will be either the Cadillac, Bay City, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Jackson, Warren, Gaylord, or Marquette District Office, depending on the selected candidate.  However, the selected candidate may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule (combination of remote and in-person) or a fully remote work schedule (with occasional travel to their official work location). Employees approved for schedules that include remote work must complete that work within Michigan. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.  When working remote, employees must use a designated workspace that is safe and professionally appropriate, allows for privacy, minimizes distractions, and includes secure internet access. Details regarding work location and schedule options for this position may be discussed during the interview process.   

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering.
Experience

Environmental Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Environmental Engineer 10
One year of professional environmental engineering experience in the protection and improvement of land and water resources, occupational health, or air quality equivalent to an Environmental Engineer 9.

Environmental Engineer P11
Two years of professional environmental engineering experience in the protection and improvement of land and water resources, occupational health, or air quality equivalent to an Environmental Engineer, including one year equivalent to Environmental Engineer 10.

Environmental Licensed Engineer 12
Three years of professional environmental engineering experience in the protection and improvement of land and water resources, occupational health, or air quality equivalent to an Environmental Engineer, including one year equivalent to an Environmental Engineer P11.
NOTE:  Also requires current Michigan Professional Engineer (PE) Licensure
