Education Intern

Chicago Shakespeare Theater is currently accepting Education Intern applications for fall 2024. Applications must be received by Monday, September 23, 2024.

The Education Department creates and coordinates several programs, including student matinee performances, professional development through teacher workshops, printed and online educational resources to complement the work on our stages, and Chicago Shakespeare Slam, a performance program for high schools across the region. Through these efforts, CST has created one of the country's most respected arts-in-education programs, further bolstered by diverse audience enrichment programs for lifelong learners.

The Education Department has a permanent staff of three who work closely with the Marketing, Development, and Artistic Departments. Interns will communicate with our roster of teachers, students, and patrons, learn from our diverse staff, and support our fall programming. The Education Intern will work 15-20 hours/week, with some Saturdays required.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Researching and writing essays, teaching activities and other materials for teacher resources
  • Internet research for production-related information and education programming updates from variety of sources
  • Assisting in the coordination and execution of Chicago Shakespeare Slam
  • Assisting in the coordination of teacher workshops
  • Maintaining records in Tessitura, a comprehensive data management system specialized for arts organizations
  • Video recording and editing of education workshops and rehearsals
  • Tabulation and qualitative analysis of evaluation and survey data

CST Education interns will gain experience in several different areas:

  • The day-to-day operations of a professional theater’s arts-in-education program
  • Development of production-related preparatory materials, activities and resources for teachers and students, including interdepartmental interactions with the CST artistic and production teams
  • Coordination and hosting of events, including teacher workshops, student matinees, and other student programming
  • Familiarity with the arts-in-education community of Chicago’s major cultural institutions through events and partnerships
  • Special projects related to theater, education, dramaturgy, and teaching

Desired Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will possess a number of the following:

  • Either one year of college coursework or one year of employment post-high school
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Maturity, good judgment, and experience in working with adolescents
  • Detail-oriented, focused work ethic
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with digital recording and editing
  • Flexibility and the ability to work proactively
