Job Description

 

General Purpose of Job:  

The Nurse Intern provides professional nursing services guided by the Transformational Model for the Professional Practice of Nursing under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Nurse Intern role is considered temporary until RN licensure is obtained.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis.  Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

  • Assesses patients and initiates appropriate nursing and/or medical care under supervision of the RN and appropriately documents patient response in the medical record.
  • Develops plan of care cooperatively with RN. Individualizes care and collaborates with the patient and available resources
  • Communicates and documents significant patient care information and changes in patient condition to RN and other medical personnel as appropriate
  • Educates patient and family according to assessed needs collaboratively with RN.
  • Performs nursing activities in accordance with Sparrow Health System policy and procedures, Michigan Public Heath Code and ANA Scope and Standards of Practice
  • Provides a safe environment for patient, family and other caregivers.
  • Nurse interns must be assigned with an RN preceptor because they are not licensed. They are not allowed to:
    • Provide care independently
    • Administer medications
    • Receive physician verbal orders
    • Note and sign physician orders
    • Develop care plans independently
  • Nurse Interns with an LPN license do not practice as LPN’s

 

Job Requirements

General Requirements

 

• Successful completion of an approved Nursing program and application for licensure exam or pending issuance of State of MI RN license due to transfer process from other US State. NCLEX exam should be completed as soon as possible. • Basic Life Support within 60 days of hire.

Work Experience

 

• Clinical knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to deliver quality patient care

Education

 

• Associate degree in Nursing • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing - preferred

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

 

• Interpersonal skills for effective communication • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.

University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center as well as being a center of excellence for bariatric, stroke and cardiac care. The ER has 4 trauma rooms as well as 62 private patient rooms: 48 adult and 14 pediatric. These rooms are utilized for the treatment of all kinds of injuries and conditions including: major trauma, neuro, cardiac, pediatrics and high risk OB. The department utilizes a 5 level triage system and advanced nursing guidelines to help expedite patient care. The ER also has on site ER case management RN’s, SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) RN's and ground Critical Care Transport team.  Recently re-designated as a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, Sparrow's ER is committed to providing quality care to every patient, every time.

  • Associates or Bachelelors Degree in Nursing
