The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire young adults for the programs. 

 

Program Start and End Date: 

October 28, 2024 - November 22, 2024

 

Position Summary 

The 2024 Fall Alumni Team (AR/MO) will be working alongside our partners at the National Park Service to complete two hitches over 4 weeks. The 4 person team (1 leader and 3 members) will be working at two separate National sites with differing goals for each.

Hitches include, but are not limited to, the projects described below:

Hitch 1: 1 Week at Harry S. Truman National Historic Site (MO)
At Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, the team will focus on a tree planting project. The crew will plant and stake trees and shrubs to provide screening of nearby residential and commercial properties and improve the site lines throughout the landscape of the farm.

Hitch 2: 3 Weeks at Arkansas Post National Monument (AR)
At Arkansas Post National Monument, projects will focus on trail maintenance. The crew will repair or replace timber retaining walls along two trails where the walls are beginning to deteriorate and bulge. The crew will also engage in a small roofing project, working alongside NPC Maintenance staff to remove shingles, install a weather shield, and install shingles.

 

Schedule 

October 28, 2024 - November 22, 2024

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work alongside a team of three other SCA members to complete conservation projects outlined by partners at the National Park Service
  • Engage as a crew member to promote healthy group dynamics as well as effective and productive teamwork
  • Work variable hours (long days and/or weekend), at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, in varying weather conditions, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Use technical equipment such as hand tools and power tools

Required Qualifications 

  • Must have previous experience working in an SCA position (internship or team)
  • Interest in serving alongside and supporting others on a team
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Have ability to legally work in the US
  • Meet SCA's criminal background check standards
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and independently travel 2 miles over varied terrain while carrying a 40-pound pack without assistance
  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor in a variety of outdoor conditions for up to 8-10 hours per day
  • Willingness to camp for up to three weeks
  • Willingness to complete administrative paperwork including timesheets and season surveys
  • With training, ability to use hand tools and power tools to complete assigned work projects.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Valid driver's license and motor vehicle record (MVR) that meets SCA standards
  • First aid or CPR certificates
  • Experience working on trail projects or working with hand or power tools

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

This team will be staying in a mix of indoor housing and front country camping. Housing and camping details will be confirmed closer to season start.

 

Compensation  

  • Living allowance: $500/week (pre-tax)
  • One-time $650 travel allowance (pre-tax)
  • SCA uniform package
  • Meals (during field days)

     

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
