General Definition

The Philadelphia Water Department is hiring candidates with a bachelor’s degree in environmental, physical or biological sciences, or chemical, environmental, civil, or sanitary engineering or engineering technology. About the Position

This is environmental inspection and compliance work learning the application of various toxic pollutant control activities. Employees assist in enforcing federal and local pretreatment regulations on industrial waste discharges into the City’s sewer system, worker exposure to toxic substances, and groundwater pollution related to hazardous substances and fuels. Work involves responding to emergencies involving hazardous substances and exposure to hazardous substances and manufacturing operations. Employees report to a technical supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in environmental or biological science, chemistry, biology, chemical, environmental, civil, or sanitary engineering or engineering technology.
    • Note: Industry-recognized certification or additional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Physical & Medical Requirements

  • Ability to physically perform duties and work in environmental conditions required of this position.

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to appointment and during tenure.
