Air Pollution Specialist

The Monitoring and Laboratory Division (MLD) is seeking highly qualified applicants to work in the Organic Laboratory Section (OLS) of the Northern Laboratory Branch.  OLS is a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to providing analytical support for CARB's ambient air monitoring and pesticide analysis networks.  OLS staff perform analysis on ambient air samples for VOCs, Toxics, greenhouse gases, and pesticides collected in support of CARBs various regulatory and community monitoring programs. OLS staff also perform method development, optimization, and validation activities in support of emerging issues and special studies for CARB’s various other Air Pollution Control Programs

 

OLS staff are responsible for chemical analysis, analytical data review and reporting, sample management, maintaining chain-of-custody, quality assurance, and specific analysis to support CARB’s Air Quality Planning and Science Division, Toxics and Transportation Division, Research Division, Industrial Strategies Division, and other California state agencies.  In a fast-paced, production-oriented environment, OLS staff are also responsible for ongoing analytical method development and the improvement of existing methods.  
 

The numerous instruments utilized by the section include; Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry, Ultra-high Performance Liquid Chromatograph, and Ultra-high Performance Liquid Chromatograph with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry.  

 

OLS staff interact with several other branches within MLD, other CARB Divisions, other CalEPA departments and offices, USEPA, and local monitoring organizations throughout California.

 

The position will mainly be working in the laboratory at 13th & T-street, Sacramento, but will have the opportunity for some telework time to meet business needs.

Working Conditions

 

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense.

  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
