Summary

These positions are located in Rocky Mountain National Park in the Facilities Management Division.

Housing: Government housing may be available on a temporary or permanent basis, but it is not guaranteed. Housing assignments are made though a bid process.

Duties

Career-Seasonal: This role is classified as Career-Seasonal. Such appointments are permanent and carry the same benefits as Career positions, but they do not guarantee year-round employment. In this role, you will be actively employed from April to October, and will be in a non-paid status for the rest of the year unless additional work becomes available during that time. Even if non-pay periods are shortened, you must still expect to be in non-pay status for at least one pay period annually, as per NPS policy.

Major Duties: This position supports a senior supervisor with the prioritization and scheduling of trail work, including the various stages of seasonal trail projects. The incumbent is responsible for creating and submitting comprehensive and timely reports on the work completed and milestones achieved, as well as tracking the maintenance and progress of projects. As a field role, the incumbent will carry out carpentry tasks, such as shaping, notching, and coping with primarily heavy logs and rough-sawn lumber to construct and upkeep trail structures, in addition to performing primarily dry-stone masonry.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. As examples of typical strenuous activity, incumbent: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 lbs., must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel and other hand tools extensively. Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.

Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in mountainous terrain at elevations between 8,000 and 13,000 feet in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around livestock or explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around rigging equipment and machinery.
 

Salary

$28.32 - $33.04 per hour
