About us:
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.

Program Description:
Grey Towers National Historic Site, built in 1886, is the ancestral home of Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the US Forest Service and twice Governor of Pennsylvania.  Grey Towers, situated on 101 acres at the foot of the Pocono Mountains and overlooking the town of Milford, PA and the Delaware River, consists of formal, landscaped and wooded grounds.  

This internship provides hands-on experience to challenge and broaden one’s knowledge of horticultural theory, maintenance and architecture.  Primary internship responsibilities will include:

  • planting, preparing and maintaining flower beds, maintaining woody ornamentals and trees, and maintaining groomed lawns (80%)
  • assisting with design, layout and preparation of horticultural exhibits and interpretive programs for special events (15%)
  • researching and reviewing historic documents and photographs as related to garden restoration (5%).

Housing is provided for this position in a three bedroom farmhouse with two bathrooms, full kitchen, washer/dryer, and Wifi.

Member Benefits:

  • $650 – roundtrip travel allowance
  • AmeriCorps eligible - education award of approximately $1,824 upon successful completion of position and service of 450 hours or more

Additional:
Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:

  • Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States.
  • Being at least 18 years or older.
  • Having a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
