•   Library Assistant III

 

Library Assistant II positions perform a variety of journey-level library-related clerical duties; answer routine questions regarding the collections, facilities, policies, and procedures; register new library cards and resolve account issues; request materials from other libraries; conduct patron training on electronic technologies; assist patrons with the use of the automated library catalog, public computers, photocopier, and self-checkout equipment; order supplies; process mail; receive and process new materials; complete daily cash register reports; and perform other duties as assigned.
 
       NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:

    2% effective 1/1/25 

     5% effective 7/1/25  

  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). 
  • Work schedules may include evenings and weekends.
  • The list established for these positions may be used to fill full-time and half-time vacancies.
  • Some Library Assistant II employees may be assigned to one or more branches within the Library Department.
  • Library Assistant II employees may be required to grasp, carry, and lift books or book totes weighing up to 50 pounds; bend; reach overhead to heights of 80 inches with the assistance of a step stool; and stand for long periods of time.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
  
 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  1. Successful completion of a Community College Certificate in Library Technology.
  2. Completion of a minimum of 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
  3. One year of full-time clerical and/or customer service experience.

 

      NOTES:

  • Volunteer and internship experience can be qualifying if you have performed clerical and/or customer service duties (experience must be confirmed and documented).
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

 

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.

 

HIGHLY DESIREABLE:

  • Basic computer and technological skills.

SCREENING PROCESS

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting.
