Third Ward Community Educator

Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving children’s health and wellbeing by eliminating harmful housing conditions. Our vision is for all children to grow up in healthy homes free of environmental hazards, accomplished through policy and advocacy, outreach and education, direct services, and continuous collaboration.

JOB TITLE: Third Ward Community Educator    

STATUS: Part-time (25 hours per week)

SALARY: $20/hour

REPORTS TO: Director of Programming

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Third Ward Community Educator is responsible for promoting and distributing lead-reducing water filters to interested residents living in Grand Rapids’ Third Ward. They will provide informal, in-home lead risk evaluations of the water systems in homes, including pipes and fixtures, as requested. They will successfully and efficiently coordinate the receipt and fulfillment of requests from residents, along with determining household eligibility and tracking of physical addresses served by the program. They will maintain accurate records of contact attempts, events attended and conversion rates of contacts to successful product distribution.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibilities of the Third Ward Community Educator will consist of, but are not limited to, the following duties: 

  • Outreach to residents through various methods, both passive (mailers, door hangers) and active (phone calls, door-to-door)
  • Attend community events to promote the program
  • Receive and respond to inquiries and requests for services through the program
  • Schedule and provide delivery or pickup of filters and educational materials
  • Develop a plan to accommodate unscheduled pickups, either on an ongoing basis or through scheduled hours and/or community-based events
  • Collect all required data points and accurately enter and maintain in Salesforce
  • Complete program reports (as deemed)
  • As requested by residents, informally observe easily accessible plumbing in the home and advise residents on potential risk based on the material composition of in-home popes, as well as advise on potential risk posed by older (pre-1996) fixtures within the home
  • Support and assist in coordinating and implementing outreach efforts and community events
  • Always demonstrate professional confidentiality; protecting the rights of clients and their families, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained
  • Possess own insured vehicle for transportation and have a valid driver’s license (mileage reimbursement provided)

 

ROLE EXPECTATIONS:
 

  • Be culturally competent and participate in trainings around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other organizations 
  • The work schedule is generally between 8:30am and 5:30pm Monday through Thursday, and 8:30am – 12:30pm on Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required
  • Part-time schedule will be agreed upon at the time of hire

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

  • Minimum of Associates of Arts or Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to meet program objectives and deadlines
  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with efficient typing skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask 
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Solution-based problem-solving skills 
  • Dedication to continuous professional growth 
  • Efficient time-management skills
  • Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to be productive while working remotely with minimal 
  • Possess own insured vehicle for transportation and have a valid driver’s license (mileage reimbursement provided)

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS (optional):
 

  • Bilingual – Spanish (Fluent in speaking and writing)
  • Experience in the non-profit sector preferred

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
