Job Summary

The Philadelphia Water Department is seeking skilled candidates for the position of Water Treatment Plant Operator. This role involves monitoring, operating, adjusting, and regulating a computer-controlled water treatment process and related equipment in a sludge processing, water purification, or wastewater treatment plant. Work is performed under the supervision of a Water Treatment Plant Operations Crew Chief and may involve some disagreeable aspects and rotating shift work.

Hiring Bonus

A hiring bonus of 15% of the starting salary ($7,188 total) is offered, with $4,792 paid upon hire (10%) and $2,396 (5%) after 12 months of employment.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • Completion of the twelfth school grade.

Experience:

  • One year of experience in operating computer-controlled wastewater treatment, water purification, or sludge processing equipment;

OR

  • Successful completion of a formal in-service training course in operating such equipment;

OR

  • Possession of a valid C-level or above Sewage Treatment Plant or Waterworks operator license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection or a comparable license from another state;

OR

  • Completion of a water treatment or wastewater treatment plant operation training course from the California State University, Sacramento School of Engineering;

OR

  • Completion of a PaDEP Wastewater or Water Treatment course conducted at Montgomery County or other community colleges.

Physical & Medical Requirements:

  • Ability to physically perform the duties and work in the environmental conditions required.
  • Ability to pass an annual medical evaluation and receive certification to use respiratory protection equipment if required.

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • HAZ/MAT Emergency Response Technician 24-hour certification within six months of appointment.
  • Certified pesticide applicator training completion certificate within six months of appointment if required.
