CO-OP/INTERN MSD/COMPLIANCE SERVICES DIVISION (SAMPLING)

MSD DIVISION OF COMPLIANCE SERVICES - SAMPLING

 

Mission: To establish a partnership with colleges and universities, exposing as many students as possible to employment opportunities in the Wastewater Industry and to help them become experienced professionals in the next generation workforce.

 

Purpose: 

To attract and cultivate bright and energetic college students and maintain ongoing partnerships with colleges and universities.  It is our goal to expose these students to our Industrial Customers as well as career opportunities in water resource management and the environmental sciences.  The Co-op program also serves as a recruitment tool to assist the Compliance Services Division (CSD) in hiring full-time personnel.

 

Overview: 

The Co-op student will be assigned to work with the Sampling Group. Under the supervision of a Senior Chemist and pre-treatment specialists, Co-ops will be exposed to various tasks performed in the Sampling Group, specifically permit sampling for industries and treatment plants. Co-op will be trained on sample collection methods as well as equipment maintenance and software usage. The CSD Sampling Group strives to reinforce the knowledge and skills the students have learned in the classroom and to build on those skills in a setting that provides “hands on” experience with a specific project.

 

Expectations: 

The Co-op student will be assigned to work with MSD’s pretreatment specialists. They will be performing a variety of functions including preservation, collection, tracking and delivery of permit samples for pretreatment and surcharge locations. They will also learn to calibrate and use sampling field equipment.  This co-op position will involve a combination of lab work, field work and office work.

Salary of student; student is tentatively scheduled to work from January - April.

Supervisory staff time.

 

Logistics: Student will be located in the MSD/RCS building, 1st floor.  The co-op student will drive a city vehicle to conduct sampling events.


Training:

The student will be trained on Compliance Service- Commercial Waste Group policies and procedures.  MSD personnel will provide instruction on proprietary databases and other on the job training for sampling requirements.


Deliverables: 

The student will be able to conduct composite and grab sampling according to 40 CFR and EPA standards

Project Manager and co-op will work together to develop a working document that defines projects and timelines that ensures that project goals and objectives will be achieved. The projects will be tailored to suit the student’s interests as available.

 

Continuation of Project Work                             (weeks #4 - 14)

 

Investigate solutions, gather information from various sources, and work as necessary to complete project deliverables as well as possible additional ideas on project solutions.

 

Perform mid-term review of project schedule and timeline at week #8. Make necessary adjustments to meet project objectives and project manager’s expectations. 

                                                       

Prepare Final Documentation and Report Out      (weeks #15 - 16)

 

Conclude projects, where possible.

 

Provide documentation and discuss with necessary parties to enable continuation of unfinished work.

 

Summarize and evaluate lessons learned.

Required Education and Experience: In order to qualify for the Intern/Co-op/Extern Program, a student must:

  • Student must have a valid Driver’s license.
  • Student must be able to drive sampling van.
  • Student must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • The student should have a background in environmental science, sampling, labwork, or engineering.
  • In addition to their primary project, students will be expected to perform other industrial waste tasks and help in other areas as assistance is needed.
