Food Access and Community Outreach Specialist

Flexible schedule: 1200 hours must be completed within one full year of service starting in Sept ’24 or later. (Ex/ September 2024 – July 2025, 30 hours/week) 

The Public Health Americorps Food Access and Community Outreach Specialist will assist in engaging residents in the development and implementation of initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles among residents living in the North and East sides of Binghamton. This position is responsible for providing support to the weekly pantry distribution at the Lee Barta Community Center and the Liberty Street community gardens. Additionally, the position will assist with community engagement efforts around the social determinants of health, including program development to address community needs and recruitment.

Position Details:

Food Access (80% of member’s time):

  • Assist with the weekly pantry distribution including intake and assisting residents with picking and packing their groceries.
  • Clean and reset the pantry and community room following pantry hours.
  • Place, pick up, and receive deliveries from the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and CHOW and stock the pantry according to safety guidelines.
  • Assist with planting, maintaining, and harvesting designated garden beds in the VINES Community Garden.
  • Communicate as needed with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, CHOW, VINES, and other partners who provide food to the center.

Program Development:

  • Support staff in the development of new programs to address the social determinants of health.
  • Support partner organizations as needed in existing programming and new initiatives as they develop.

Community Engagement:

  • Support the development of neighborhood buy-in for the agency initiatives by meeting with residents, businesses, faith leaders, and other civic leaders in the target communities as assigned.
  • Support the development of neighborhood leadership by recruiting, training, and supporting residents from the target communities to serve as volunteers.
  • Represent the agency at community events, forums, planning meetings, and work groups as assigned.
  • Coordinate the dissemination of information about the agency activities, events, and progress.

Please note: AmeriCorps positions are unlike traditional jobs or internships. An AmeriCorps position runs for a set amount of time (in this case, September 2024 – June 2025) for a set number of hours (1200). Throughout the course of their term, the member receives a living allowance of $15,500, broken into bi-weekly payments. At the end of the member’s term, they receive an education award of $5,176.50 to put towards education expenses (tuition, student loans, etc). 

Requirements

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency
  • A high school diploma or GED
  • In-person service in Binghamton, NY
