Sustainability Programs Assistant (AmeriCorps Position)

The primary goal of the Sustainability Programs Assistant (AmeriCorps position) is to engage Resident Life staff and students living within University Housing in key sustainability initiatives. This position serves as a key collaborator between the UWM Office of Sustainability and UWM University Housing.

The Sustainability Programs Assistant will play a crucial role in expanding communication and education related to campus recycling, waste diversion, and compost, and will provide new programming centered around environmental topics of concern to student residents.

1)  Collaborate with the UWM Office of Sustainability, University Housing, and Dining & Retails services to promote priority sustainability initiatives to residents of University Housing, including but not limited to: recycling, composting, energy conservation, waste reduction, and alternative transportation.

  • Establish engaging communication strategies to build a culture of recycling and waste diversion within University Housing.
  • Develop and implement train-the-trainer style initiatives to promote sustainability programming at scale.
  • Develop and implement passive education materials (print, digital, social media, videos, etc.) based on student interest and concerns.
  • Gather and interpret data to inform programming decisions.
  • Further refine recycling campaigns and training procedures to ensure internal staff and students are properly participating in sustainability programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between multiple departments, vendors, and stakeholder groups.

2)  Host special events and programming within University Housing, such as Earth Week and Resident Assistant Trainings.

  • Support special volunteer events.

3)  Support campus-wide Office of Sustainability programs:

  • Represent the Office of Sustainability with community partners, students, staff, and faculty.
  • Take part in regular all-team activities, including gardening, team building, etc., often involving physical labor.

Position Details

The Sustainability Programs Assistant (AmeriCorps Position) serves primarily on-site, in-person at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Some flexibility for teleservice hours is available, with approval from the AmeriCorps Program (Marshfield Clinic).

The position is available for part-time (average 20-24 hours/week), three-quarter-time (average 28-32 hours/week) or full-time (average 36-40 hours/week) status.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Excellent written and verbal communications.
  2. Computer literacy, including proficient use of Microsoft Office and web applications.
  3. Interest in sustainability and student programming.
  4. Willingness and ability to work in a non-linear work environment while remaining flexible.
  5. Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  6. Applicants must also meet the requirements of the Marshfield Clinic Community Corps program available online. 
  7. The selected candiate must also apply to and be accepted into Marshfield Clinic’s Community Corps program (UWM will facilitate this with the selected candidate).

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to stand, walk, push, pull, and sit for extended periods of time.
  2. Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
  3. Exposure to a range of weather conditions.
  4. Possible exposure to foul odors (such as from compost or recycling).
  5. Possible equipment used: hand tools (such as rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, hoses, and other tools); computer, printer, and office equipment.
  6. This position requires primarily on-site, in-person work; some of the project may be completely remotely at the discretion of the site host.

  • Member Living Allowance: The living allowance will be $21,500 for full-time members, $15,050 for three-quarter time members and $10,750 for half-time members for the 2024-25 service term.
  • Member Education Award: Upon successful completion of the service term (1,700 hours minimum full-time, 1200 hours three-quarter time or 900 hours half-time), members will be eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award which has been determined to be $7,395 for full-time members, $5,176.50 for three-quarter time members and $3,697.50 for half-time members.

The 2024-25 AmeriCorps service term is Sept. 9, 2024 – Aug. 30, 2025.
