Position Summary 

The Student Conservation Association team (SCA) will provide services at three locations within Indiana Dunes National Park: West Beach, Portage Lakefront, and Great Marsh. These areas have been identified in the Parks Resource Stewardship Strategy as priority resource areas for conservation and restoration work. Invasive species control has been identified as a critical management action. Approximately 30 gross acres of invasive plants would be treated within the units. Eradication of invasive species will have a direct positive impact on multiple rare habitats such as Cottonwood Dune Open Woodlands, Pannes, and Great Marsh as well as dozens of rare plant species and the parks only Federally Threaten plant species (Cirsium pitcheri).

 

Schedule 

August 26, 2024 - December 15, 2024

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Invasive Species Control, Plant Identification, Herbicide Application, Operation of Brush Cutters & Hand Tools, Native Seed Collection, Native Plug Plating, Maintaining a Culture of Safety & Inclusivity,

 

Marginal Duties 

Helping Maintain Tools, Submitting Output Logs, Support Volunteers, Interact Positively with NPS Staff and Park Visitors, Data Entry.

 

Required Qualifications 

At least one year/season of outdoor related field experience, Reliable source of transportation, Willingness to work independently and with a team, Interest or practical experience in Ecological Restoration, Biology & Botany. Must be over the age of 18.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Experience working with invasive plants species, plant ID knowledge, degree or relevant course work in biology and ecology, local to NW Indiana, has a basic understanding of NW Indiana ecosystems.

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Housing is not provided for this position.

 

Compensation  

$16 / Hr

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
