Job Summary


The Department of Natural Resources is seeking to fill the Hydrologist 3 position. This is a full-time, year-round position. This position requires travel to monitoring sites and mining operations. The selected candidate will have the option to report to one of the following locations: St. Paul or Hibbing. 

This position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement. 

This position provides technical expertise in the hydrologic and hydrogeologic aspects of projects requiring permitting (Permit to Mine, Water Appropriation or Public Water Work) or environmental review to address both water quantity and quality, and expert technical analysis of the nature, distribution, appropriation, and sustainability of water resources throughout the state, with a focus on the Mesabi Iron Range. Groundwater and/or surface water modeling will be a large part of this position's work. 

  • Provide scientific and technical expertise for water management-related aspects of the Permit to Mine and Water Permit Programs, including new mining proposals, mine closure or abandonment of minelands, pursuant to state statute and rule.
  • Participate in the environmental review process by reviewing project proposals for ferrous, non-ferrous and peat mining project proposals, and other mining-related projects. 
  • Provide hydrologic and/or hydrogeologic expertise to assess the accuracy and validity of coupling geochemistry with flow (e.g., fate and transport of solutes).
  • Conduct advanced analyses of hydrologic and/or hydrogeologic issues of concern for the purpose of identifying potential impacts, understanding trends, or predicting outcomes.
  • Support administration of the Water Permit Programs pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 103G, Minnesota Rules Chapter 6115, and DNR policy so that proposals for ferrous, non-ferrous, and peat mining activities, as well as municipal water supplies and other mining-related activities, conform to established policies and criteria and potential hydrological or hydrogeological issues are understood.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Division’s monitoring program to further the understanding of surface and groundwater hydrology across the Mesabi Iron Range (and other mining regions as needed) and provide a better assessment of impacts that project proposals may have on ecosystems, hydrology, hydrogeology, and geochemistry.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in one of the following disciplines: Civil or Environmental Engineering, Hydrology or Hydrogeology, Forest Hydrology, Geology or Geophysics, Natural Resources or Environmental Studies, Water Resources Management, or related degree.
  • Three hydrology qualifying courses in the areas of: Hydrology, Hydraulics, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrologic Modeling, Watershed Management, Groundwater, Fluid Mechanics, fluvial geomorphology.
  • OR Two hydrology qualifying courses and two courses (or equivalent experience) in: Geology, Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Geography, Limnology, Erosion and Sediment Control, Environmental Engineering, Soils.
  • Four (4) years of experience in areas of hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources management, or regulation or related technical or regulatory work at the Hydrologist 1, 2 or equivalent professional level, such as an environmental technician, geologist, wetland biologist, or water resource analyst. An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in one of the above disciplines may be substituted for 1 year of experience.
  • Experience with surface and/or groundwater modeling and the ability to use computer software to compile, analyze, and present hydrologic/hydrogeologic data.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively on a team.
  • Knowledge of the principles of groundwater and surface water flow as well as the ability to interpret related geochemistry data.
  • Experience using ArcMap
  • Skill and experience writing technical documents such as reports, work plans, and technical memos and the ability to present technical information to the public, peers, and management.
  • Ability to plan and track work amidst competing demands to ensure work products are completed in a timely manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including teamwork, effective communication, and collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in one of the following disciplines:  Civil, Geological or Environmental Engineering, Forest Hydrology, Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Hydrology or equivalent.
  • Licensed or possess the education requirements for licensure as a Professional Geologist in Minnesota.
  • Additional course(s) in hydrology, or hydrogeology, or geochemistry.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of mining on surface and groundwater hydrology, and water quality. 
  • Experience with water quality modeling.
  • Basic knowledge of polices, statutes and rules as they apply to mining and related water management. 
  • Experience working with data loggers, pressure transducers and/or weather stations.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
