Probate Court Intern

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs legal research; drafts legal documents for assigned members of the judiciary & Register; and provides other administrative support to the Register. This position is good fit for someone interested in a career in public administration, pre-law, or legal studies.

FUNCTIONS:

Provides administrative support.

Researches statutory and case law for precedents and opinions with respect to points of law and application thereof in similar cases.

Searches electronic and hardcopy legal resources for relevant legal precedents and interpretations.

Monitors legislation proposed or pending in state legislatures and Congress; state and federal judicial decisions; administrative law decisions; agency rule and regulation changes; and other legal trends affecting probate law matters.

Performs case management functions.

Provides general assistance the Probate Register by maintaining well-ordered legal and case files, ensuring ready retrievability of documents, exhibits and other materials.

Completes court documents and forms

Performs other work as required to expedite litigation in probate matters.

CONTACTS:

This position has frequent contact with:

Judges, attorneys, federal and state administrative agency staff.

Federal and state agencies to research letters of opinion and administrative rules and regulations affecting the interpretation and application of probate-related statutes.

Court personnel and opposing parties and their legal representation in reference to proposed or pending litigation.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Ability to perform legal research.

Effective written and oral communication skills.

Ability to interact positively and effectively with members of the general public, judges, attorneys, officers of the Court and other individuals from widely diverse social and cultural backgrounds.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances and devices to increase mobility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a normal office environment.
